Worlds First Drum Machine in Pedal Form!

I don't know much about the RC-3, but I decided to go with a Pigtronix Infinity Looper for the MIDI capabilities. I think that you would really want MIDI sync in a Beat Buddy/looper combo.

Blah blah blah. Nobody on this thread knows ANYTHING about Beat Buddy in the real world - except the one single guy who has one. Shutting down here until someone can speak from personal experience. Otherwise there's nothing here but speculation.

I don't need to have a Beat Buddy in my possession to comment on whether or not MIDI sync would be a useful feature in a drum machine/looper combo. #sorrynotsorry you're annoyed by the continued speculation in a thread about an unreleased product that you decided to subscribe to. No need to be rude about it.

Funny, I've yet to get bored with ANY kind of masturbation! But to the beat of My Beat Buddy (WOW... pun, now intended!) it will be even better! :p

Since we're on the subject... could you imagine, for those of us who didn't, experiencing your first orgasm not at your own hands, but at the hands or body of another? I believe I would have handcuffed that girl to me instantly, and driven straight to a church to make her marry me. Within 5 minutes.

Yeah, these are the kind of things that pop up in my head while eating ice cream with friends. Thought about that a couple of days ago.

With logic like this (and endless speculations in a thread like this), the Beat Buddy company has probably raked in $100 million in pre-orders.

I'm not sure why you're still posting in a thread whose very continuation you seem aggressively opposed to? It was started to bring attention to and discussion about an unreleased product, and continues to do so regardless of your dissatisfaction...

Precisely. Would you be so kind as to stop filling up my notifications with useless NOT speculations. I subbed FOR the speculations ;)

Man... I WISH!!! ;-)

I am about to meet with our shipping company to make the final logistical arrangements, so you should have plenty of non-speculation to discuss very soon!

And now for something completely different ....... a question!

I'll be looking to pair up the Beat Buddy with a Boomerang III looper. I know for the two of them to work correctly together, I'll need to connect them via MIDI. I've never had a need for MIDI in the past.

Does anyone have any insight or tips on using MIDI with these two devices. (I would think MIDI with the Boomerang vs. any other piece of gear would be similar so it probably doesn't need to be Boomerang specific tips.)

Is it still projected that the software will be released a month before units are?.....any "non-speculation" of a software release date?

No. We plan on shipping within the next two weeks. Our engineers got sidetracked from the software completion by some firmware issues that came up which we needed to fix before shipping the units. But now we're back working on the software and we should complete that before we ship. Sorry about the delay -- things always seem to take more time than you would expect.

Cool...tnx for the speedy reply.

I don't own a Boomerang III and I obviously don't own a Beat Buddy (yet). However, I do own a Pigtronix Infinity Looper and have some basic experience with MIDI. My experience with MIDI is primarily in chaining effects boxes together so that tempo can be shared from one to another, and of course this is a big reason why one would want to use MIDI with the Beat Buddy (or any other drum machine in case you're still reading, UB!).

I'm going to assume you know absolutely nothing, so please don't be offended if this seems overly simplistic!

You'll need a MIDI cable, and for the Beat Buddy in particular you'll need a "breakout" MIDI cable, because the Beat Buddy uses a much smaller MIDI port. Instead of two ports, in and out, it uses a smaller, single unified port and requires a special type of Y-cable in order to connect to other units. If you want to know what I mean, well I happen to be selling one! Check out the link in my signature. As I describe there, I'm selling it because I went ahead and bought the Beat Buddy one that has a right angle plug for a few bucks more.

For connecting the units together by MIDI, once you've physically connected them with the proper cables, you'll need to make sure they're operating on the proper channels. MIDI can operate on several different channels, so you just need to make sure they're on the same page. Again, with the Beat Buddy and the Boomerang, I'm not sure what the default channels would be. Devices that only have MIDI in may have a set channel, but I would assume/hope that any device with a MIDI out like the Beat Buddy can be set to any channel that you desire. Also, on your MIDI devices you have to set them properly so that tempo are sent and received (I have to do this on my Eventide units; on my Line6 M5 I think it's on by default).

I've only scratched the surface of my Infinity Looper, so I can't tell you how the MIDI sync will work. But in addition to tempo, there are also start/stop commands. Again, not too much info on how this will work from the Beat Buddy perspective or from how the loopers work. At a minimum, the idea is certainly that your loop length is quantized with the tempo so that you don't need to be as precise with when you start/stop loops, and they will have loop lengths that are an integer number of beats/measures.

So again, I'm not expert, but if I were trying to bring someone with zero experience up to speed, those are things I would think they need to know. I'm really excited to get more hands-on experience with it myself in the coming weeks.

I also use a Boomerang III, though have yet to utilize the new MIDI functionality. Page 19 of the updated manual ( http://www.boomerangmusic.com/Manuals/E156ManualVersion33.pdf ) suggests that the Rang should automatically sync to a sent clock signal at the MIDI input, so no need to configure it as long as you have the newest software loaded. You will just have to get ahold of a cable as mentioned above and make sure that the MIDI Out from the Beat Buddy is going to the MIDI In of the Rang and that the Beat Buddy is configured to send a Master Clock signal. The Rang will also respond to Start and Stop commands from the BB according to the manual.

Both great responses. I'll add that, if you want to get technical (noting that what follows is a gross simplification!) MIDI can send all sorts of messages, and among them, tempo and "clock" (note, MIDI clock not MTC = MIDI Time Code which is SMPTE time) are among the most fundamental and easy ones to code for, so I wouldn't forsee you having many issues. Very often, more "generic" (as in, has some MIDI functions but its main deal is not MIDI) devices use the "OMNI" channel, which listens on all channels, which is nice!

I _do_ know absolutely nothing, so I liked it fine.
We've had a MIDI-capable keyboard for at least 15 years and never had anything to connect it to or a reason to connect it. Now with BeatBuddy, a couple of input pads, mini keyboards, and the big one - and a capable DAW, I can see myself getting sucked into yet another excuse-to-avoid-practicing time sink...

The BeatBuddy sends out the MIDI Sync signal automatically as long as it is connected properly. We've tested it with both the Boomerang III and the Infinity Looper and it works beautifully :-)

FYI, From the Manual:

Midi Sync is used to Synchronize the BeatBuddy with your MIDI based loopers and effects (and other MIDI devices) to create a powerful performance system.

The BeatBuddy uses a single PS/2 port for both MIDI In and Out. A Midi breakout cable is required (sold separately) to convert the PS/2 port to separate full size 5 pin MIDI In and Out ports.

Midi sync functions supported: Tempo clock, Start and Stop.

When a MIDI sync enabled device is plugged into the BeatBuddy's IN port, it controls the BeatBuddy (BeatBuddy is Slave). When a MIDI sync enabled device is plugged in the the BeatBuddy's OUT port, it is controlled by the BeatBuddy (BeatBuddy is Master).

If BeatBuddy is slave (MIDI sync IN): Active pause is automatically enabled.

If BeatBuddy is master (MIDI Sync OUT):

While using normal pause: Start command is triggered on beginning of Intro fill and when unpaused. Stop command triggered when paused and at end of outro fill (or immediate stop with triple tap).

While using active pause: Start command on beginning of Intro fill, Stop command at end of outro fill (or immediate stop with triple tap). No Start or Stop command while using pause function.

Active Pause

Active Pause is enabled through the Settings menu by pressing the Drum Set and Tempo knobs down at the same time. Active pause acts like a mute on the BeatBuddy's sound. Instead of stopping the beat and starting it at the beginning of the measure, like in normal pause mode, during Active Pause, the beat continues playing with the sound muted and is unmuted when unpaused. This allows the beat to stay in sync to loopers and other musical devices while paused.
