it depends on your definition of technical. i think being highly technical is far more than just playing fast. clarity & fluidity imho are far more important.

if i had to pick 1 bassist it would be manring because nobody else can sound like a 3 or 4 man band on his/her own. otherwise my list would be:

michael manring
victor wooten
gary willis
jeff berlin
john pattituci
alain caron

i haven't had the chance to listen to the other guys mentioned like dickens, dipiazza or perz though.

Funny that you mention Dominique, I saw him perform live with McLaughlin in Amsterdam about 10 years ago. All the guitar freaks in the audience who had come to drool over John were even more blown away by Dominique who copied McLaughlin's razor sharp chops note by note. And Triluk Gurtu on percussion, what a wonderful night. Qua Alegria is also one of my favourite albums.

And I just bought the Vic Wooten book with transcriptions. I think I will keep it as reading material in the john, I will never be able to play like that, not even close :crying:

Dixie is good Marie is just awesome - I second JMX - the trio album with Dennis Chambers, Bireli Lagrene and Di Piazza called "Front Page" is even better - there's another solo bass piece called 'I Wait For The Lord' and it's just unreal - Piazza has not only got the chops, but he is also extremely musical - I'm pretty sure he tunes his five string E - C like Matt Garrison - he's a great all round fusion player - just awesome, with very few to touch him as a musician. He's also a fulltime priest! How weird is that?

Yeah we had the Dicken's debate a week or so back - he is a great musician but his uber-fast slapping is really more theatrical than musical - for me all this 9-string bass **** pisses me off - look at what Wooten does with just <b>FOUR</b> strings for goddssake! YOU DON'T NEED MORE STRINGS TO PLAY BETTER - IT'S JUST ABOUT MUSICIANSHIP AND KNOWLEDGE - NOT 1,000000 STRINGED BASSES!

In My Opinion....!

Sorry aboiut that - just had to get that off my chest! I've calmed down now....
