Worship Bass Pedalboards

Basically I use the Octabvre (or OC-2) as my basic synth patch, for Oberheim type lines. I don't have any good recordings of myself, but for example Elevation's "Overcome." That's with the lower octave soloed, and I love that tone. Sometimes I'll dial in the dry for Stevie Wonder style bass lines, but not too often.

The Meatbox gets used for long notes, often during breakdown choruses. I'm going for cathedral pipe organ foot pedal sounds. For example, on Leland's The Lion And The Lamb, the first chorus breaks down, great time for some Meatbox thunder.
That makes sense. I just watched the videos. I can totally hear that. Thanks for the tip.

So I was referred to here from the Praise and Worship thread, and I'm sure you have already covered it, but what pedals are absolutely needed if you were building a pedal board from scratch.

This is what I'm thinking so far, please offer any advice and criticism.

Tuner, Turbo Tuner ST-300
Grit/distortion, Dark Glass B3K

Into my Fender rumble head which has onboard compression, distortion, and a DI. It's class D and small enough to fit on a larger pedal board. Add the channel switch for the rumble distortion, so I can have two distortions set up differently and foot switchable.

Thoughts?

Currently my church uses a Boss tuner into a Sansamp, and that's it. No extra grit, no anything, although I know they can add compression and reverb to the signal at the sound board.

might consider adding a Neunaber Expanse that can be programmed thru USB to do most any kind of delay (chorus, reverb, tape echo, freeze, etc).

Also, can the board add compression and/or reverb to only the bass channel? only when it's needed? I really prefer to have control of reverb myself, so it can be turned on for a specific song, and off for others. Compression for me is always on.

Personally I like a light overdrive, and I'm currently using the Darkglass VMT for that, but have also picked up a Solidgoldfx Beta DLX and have started playing with that.

Those are the two ODs on my hit list. Are they apples to apples or quite distinct?

Distinct. VMT is light overdrive (for me anyhow), whereas SGFX Beta DLX can be a little heavier (with limited testing). In any case, at this point, I'm keeping both. And thinking about adding a Darkglass Alpha Omega also, although I might be able to get close to the AO with the DLX ...

On my board I use the VMTD and the Red Witch Factotum for two levels of drive - LOTS of fun!

Also - I have been experimenting with the Eventide H9 app to change the parameters for the algorythms on the pedal - LOTS of fun! A couple of times I caused my son to come running from the back of the house to see what that sound was. He has a Launchpad and is enjoying using that to create stuff.

After listening to some sound samples I think I am sold on the VMT. The Expanse seems like a great pedal, but I honestly have no idea where to even begin with stuff like that. I've never needed any chorus, reverb, delay, etc for bass. That's perhaps an argument in its favor with the software being able to change stuff up. Personally I like the looks of the "wet" the best.

Currently thinking Turbo Tuner -> VMT -> Rumble Head and maybe adding the Expanse in their somewhere.

The Rumble has compression, EQ, and a DI. I set my EQ flat on everything until the sound people ask for something to change, I try to let them handle it as much as possible. My main bass has a Noll active preamp in it that can do a lot of tone shaping with it's onboard EQ.

Anyone use the Darkglass Alpha/Omega? It seems to have a lower overdrive setting that I think would work for church, and the name fits obviously.
I've used my Alpha Omicron...used to own the VMT, like it better than my VMT...but I'm going to be selling the AOm too, as it just doesn't play well with my MBD-1, which I really like!

I was going to get the new AOU...but cancelled that.

If you're interested in my AOm...pm me, and we can work something out.

So you've used both VMT and AO and the MBD-1 does it all? As good as the DG products, or better? A really good light OD is my main thing ...

I love the MBD-1 as a light always-on OD, but it can also be driven really hard. The MBD-1 has more inherent low mids/lows than the DG pedals...just sounds "bigger" to my ears. It's easy to fatten your bass tone, without breaking up...if desired.

However, I much prefer stacking /OD/distortion pedals, so still looking for something with more sizzling highs when I want it. I have a ThorpyFX Fallout Cloud fuzz/distortion pedal incoming tonight. Ultra boutique pedals are my "weak spot"...;)

To be clear, MANY people love the AO or AOm stacked with the MBD-1...it just doesn't seem to work for me.

The MBD-1 is like driving a freight train thru a mix if desired, much more so than the AOm or VMT, imo... So when you dial it way back, it's a pretty quiet pedal--with huge amounts of "fatness" to your bass tone. I'm also considering a B3Kv2 to stack with the MBD-1...but I'll know better after tonight, if I'm making any "stacking progress" with the Thorpy...:)

Just to be clear, are we talking the $666 Damnation mbd-1 or the $99 Mooer mbd-1? I assume the one that's out of my budget.

And assuming so, if the AO and VMT are out, what about the B3K? It seems to me like on its lowest settings it would only be a touch of overdrive and would be completely useable. I know the B7K can make a delightful clean sound, but I'd rather not go that expensive on one pedal (although if I do I'm going Kraken all the way)

DA MBD-1...but that's not the going price...new about $225-ish...but I believe they're out of stock atm. Keep an eye on the classifieds...about the same $ as a DG pedal.

The DG AO, AOm, and VMT are super pedals! Many people use them as their primary OD pedal. I found that they didn't give me the thickness that the MBD-1 provides at low gain. If you jump over to the DA thread, you'll see a lot of people use the MBD-1 as their OD "foundation" and then stack, either before or after, with DG and other pedals. But it's very much an IME/IMHO thing. That's why pedals are such a rabbit hole for most of us...;)
