I've been gradually simplifying my signal chain since I started playing for my church more than three years ago. We use MyMix (networked) with IEMs, and I run my 5-string jazz bass through a Behringer BDI21 to the FOH digital board. We have some good sound people, and they have some decent equipment to work with (good subs, and "flying J" arrays for the mids and high end). I've noticed that as I simplify my signal chain, I've been getting a better fit in the mix, and the sound techs have been bringing up the bass volume. I now use just the bridge pickup (a Bill Lawrence J-45) with a bit of grit dialed into the BDI21. It seems to fit well for most of the songs we do, and with a bit of technique, I haven't needed much else to give variety to the tone. I will admit that when we play outdoors, I give in to the desire to get a wider sound palette, and that's when I look at effects. It's also when I expect my Greenboy 15/6/1 and 12/6/1 will shine.

It's sort of funny. Today's sermon was about Jesus telling people to "take the least important place", and that the host might then say "move up higher". I've seen that very thing happen as I try to focus simply on supporting the songs, locking with the drummer, and avoiding "flash". As time goes on, I've had a variety of people (from little children all the way up to people in the "above 80" range) tell me how much they enjoy having me play for worship songs. And now, apparently, the sound techs are bringing up the volume on the bass. Go figure. Guess the Lord knew what he was talking about.

Yeah, I think there was a thread titled "Passive Worship Bass To Direct Box Thru A Cable" but for some reason it did not generate many posts....

But I jest, for a long while I ran my active and passive basses to the direct box through a cable. It's fine, but an MS-60B is better, in my opinion. So far the only thing I use the Zoom for is a tuner/mute and a gain equalizer between my basses. My main bass has a headstock tuner and a master volume that I use to mute and it is the standard I equalize the other levels to so I don't use the Zoom with it so far. But I still bring it along just in case the WL wants a last minute key change. That pitch shifter could come in real handy!

Welcome Johno! If you ever need anything, PM me. I am happy to help in anyway I can. On a bass related note, you will find the Zoom combo to be more than adequate with the setup you mentioned. I don't even bring an amp or cab to church anymore. The sound guys are happy, and the tone is still sweet.

Yep, gig bag with Nano in pocket. No amps on stage at all. Very nice FOH, and really young Worship Team (WL included). I will be the "elderly statesman"!
They do a lot of Hillsong United type tunes. Really looking forward to making a "Beautiful Noise unto The Lord!"

I'm using a Boss GT-100, with an ElectroHarmonix Freeze pedal in the effects loop.

For bass I am mainly using the 100 for the effects loop so that I can help create a pad with the Freeze pedal, but still have my original tone when not using the Freeze. It really fills out when we don't have someone on keys.

It doesn't hurt to be able to add a little grit from the GT-100 to the sound when needed.

The Freeze pedal is amazing; polyphonic; I use it for a lot of root-5-octave sounds for beefing up the pad the keyboard is playing.

It does color the tone, however, so I have the effects loop programmed as a parallel loop, so that I can have an uncolored signal in addition to the Freeze signal.

The Freeze tracks very well, even down to the open E. It doesn't like the low B on my MTD, though.

I'm using a RNC compressor after the GT-100 right now and it does a nice job.

That feeds a direct box into the FOH snake.

I occasionally lead worship with an acoustic guitar, and for that I love using the multieffects unit; it is hard to lead in prayer while bending down to change the effects for the next song on a pedalboard. ;~)

Thanks Adam, my life is truly Blessed. I have a great wife that was saved on the same day I was, three wonderful kids, a job (for the first time in a year and a half), and a place to worship Jesus that totally Rocks! And I give thanks every day for the blessings that have been bestowed upon me.

And I get to play bass for God!

Its great to hear your story Johno! And you're right, there is nothing better than playing for the Lord.

BTW, which in ear monitors are you using?

About a year and a half ago we removed all the amps and monitor wedges from the platform and went to in ears and it has made such a difference to the sound during worship!

I have no idea, and this will be my first time ever using IEM's. I am going to my first practice on Thursday, and I will get a complete run down on the stage equipment.
I'll let you guys know, so I can get some sagely advice!
