Worship Bass Pedalboards

Thanks, I use the parallel output out of the TC Spectra Drive.
I've been getting a LOT of compliments on my sound!

Awesome. This gives me some ideas. So do you run through everything, then run the parallel output just to the Darkglass? And then mix the two xlr outputs through the radial unit? Color me intrigued. But I'd have to figure out how to work in my modulation effects. I guess I could run everything, modulation included, and end in my tech 21 vtbass DI, and then run the parallel out of that into my dirt pedals, ending in my OCSD Deluxe. Then have a clean/modulated and dirt channel which I could mix.

My head hurts.

My latest incarnation. The VMT isn't always on anymore, it's set up with some snarl but I don't use that tone much. I'm constantly swapping compressors and the Octavbre for an OC-2. The Diamond is very nice. I previously had the Cali76CB - I thought it was good but didn't have "magic." I recently got back my Accountant from a repair and its going up against the Diamond sometime soon. I used it on a rock gig the other night and it's even better than I remembered.

Nice! OCSD > Noble (using the Noble DI instead)?

I have a while to think about it with my move but I am thinking of selling my H9 and running just the tuner - Super Symmetry - Vintage Microtubes - OmniCabSim. I could keep the Factotum and Wonderlove on a separate chain with a Radial switcher. Just initial thoughts, the H9 is an awesome pedal but all I use in a Worship setting is the warm chorus. The other algorithms are great fun...in my practice time. Or, maybe I just need to experiment more.

I go tuner, octave, then TC SpectraDrive, then the parallel output goes to a Cali76 compact bass and then on to a Darkglass unit. I use a B7K Ultra V2 with one bass and a Vintage Ultra V2 with another bass that I can swap out, depending on which bass I'm using. The TC has its own compressor and this way you can have different compression on the different pre-amps, then XLR out of both units to the Radial. I use a small mixer at home to set my levels the way I want, and the Radial then mixes both signals together and sends them to the board.

Most churches don't use bass amps anymore so this is the way to get a clean DI and a miked up amp/cab sound at the same time, and it sounds incredible!
I'll never go back to a straight DI again!

Yes, this. ^
I was fine without a pedalboard for a long time. But since lately I have been playing in churches which meet at a variety of different venues, and churches running ampless is the new norm, and given that I'm a bit of a tone snob and a control freak and I don't trust the average undertrained (in my experience) church sound person to be able to coax a decent bass tone out of a direct box and what is likely an outdated and under-powered sound system, I had to begin the never-ending search for the right pedalboard setup. The goal being to send the best possible EQ'd and compressed signal to the FOH that I could. I think I'm finally there and I'm just adding some pieces that are icing-on-the-proverbial-cake at this point. The OCSD is a big part of it for me, especially with drives. I won't leave home without it. But this "bi-amping in a pedalboard" concept is quite intriguing. Now I have to start all over again. Thanks a lot!

Very similar to what I am doing, running a clean DI signal and then using an Alpha Omega Ultra downstream for OD and amp sim, then piping both back to a pedalboard mounted mixer to blend the signals. My thought was to have a Geddy Lee style rig that was pedalboard based rather than in a rack.

What kind of mixer are you using?

I'm basically using the T-65 to mix my clean and dirty signals. Besides using it for ocatve/synth stuff, I put my dirt in the loop and I can turn the octaves all the way down and just use the clean and loop volumes to mix clean and dirty paths before sending to my DI. The way it blends works a lot better for me than any clean blend on an individual dirt pedal that I've used....plus you can clean blend in with a full chain of stacked dirt.

Having said that, I got to drive my smallsound/bigsound mini pretty hard for a song this weekend, and it holds the low end well enough that I didn't feel the need to blend any clean in anyway (just threw the T-65 in bypass mode to run directly through the loop). But I've always got the option to parallel blend my clean signal in, which is nice.

I really like this layout with the OSCD into the Noble. I've seriously been thinking of selling my Meatsmoke pre and Reddi for the Noble. Just to downsize a bit. The question is... should I?

I wonder sonically what the difference is between using a dirt pedal with a blend, and actually splitting the signal and running a clean and dirty and then blending them back together again. For the most part the bassists I try to emulate send at least two signals to the board, a clean and dirty, and let the sound guy do the mixing. But there's no way a church sound person is going to get that dialed in right. Again, in my experience.

So the question is, am I better off just using my Darkglass VMT with its own blend knob and my Zvex Basstortion going into the OCSD in one long uber-chain with the rest of my effects, or actually splitting the signal at some point in the chain and running a clean and dirty channel that I would then blend together at the end with some sort of mixing pedal or direct box like the Radial Mix 2:1. Perhaps the latter method would yield more control over the sound, but I wonder if the difference is really that noticeable in the grand scheme of things.

Sure. Seems simple enough. But then you'd still need to go through a direct box since it's all 1/4" ins and outs. Maybe something like the ART or the Radial Mix 2:1 would have the same end result while eliminating the need for a direct box. 6 of one half dozen of another, I suppose.

I like how the Art and the Radial have headphone outs, though. That would come in handy for practice purposes. Especially since I'd be losing the headphone capabilities of the OCSD if I'm only using it to mix in the drive signal.

For all of you using the OCSD, how much of a difference in tone are we talking in comparison to only using a good preamp/DI pedal like the Mesa Subway DI that is on my board? Is it THAT much more noticeable to you, the sound guys, or anyone out in the congregation?

Using a Darkglass VMTD - YES!, it is that noticeable to me, the sound lady and musicians in the congregation...non-musicians, as always, usually don't have a clue.
