That was the first thought that came to mind: recording/studio vs. live is a bit different. I think those touches make a much bigger difference in a controlled studio mix. When it's a live/house mix unless you do big changes like those stated above, it's probably not going to be real evident to those listening.And I agree with you as well. Subtle things get lost in the full band mix. I think we get lead astray for lack of a better term, when we listen to "studio" recordings and try to make that happen live. Even the bands themselves don't recreate the the studio sound live. And of course listening to myself in GarageBand with all the things is very different than how it will sound live. That's why I've held to my simple and fairly clean set up. Although thet tube compressor does help a lot.
It still matters, and when you hit that perfect tone for a given song it's great, but it's always a balance between chasing those moments and pragmatism.
