I’ve got a hankering to try the Darkglass X Ultra, or maybe the Infinity. I’m a big fan of crossover distortion. But the infinity is super spendy.

Uh-oh. Here we go again. That age old question to which hundreds of threads on Talkbass are likely dedicated. The search for the perfect drive is a really fun . . . but never-ending . . . one. The problem is "good dirt/drive" can mean different things to different people.

My number one question is: Do you want overdrive or distortion? I decided that I like both, but for different reasons, and they are very different.

Solid points here! In my case, I have ended up using a distortion for my first (lower) gain stage (Damnation Audio MBD-2) and an overdrive for my second (higher) gain stage (Flattley Bass Chief). The categories (overdrive vs distortion) would suggest this is counterintuitive, but I prefer the sound of the MBD-2 distortion at low gain and the Bass Chief overdrive at a higher level. Just shows how subjective it all is. And I really want to fit my Free-The-Tone Black Vehicle back on my board because it's my favorite overdrive, but now that I added an expression pedal I don't have room. So it goes haha

I’m gonna have to look into it. I’m all about simplicity though… I feel like there would be a big learning curve to that compared to my keeley bassist and BDDI. But that may be a good set and forget pedal as well…

Oh, stop it. There is no way the Infinity is going to replace your REDDI. Now, on the other hand, it will probably sound amazing into the REDDI. I had the ADAM for a hot minute. It's pretty sweet. Incredibly flexible and powerful, and I'm sure the Infinity is even more so. Dare I say infinitely more so?

True, and I’m not in a hurry to sell them. If I like the Infinity for the cover band, I may leave the Empress/REDDI at church. Or maybe the Infinity will work there, too. We’ll have to see when I get my hands on it, but I’m hearing lots of good buzz.

That's one of the many fun things about effects. There are (almost) no rules. If it sounds good to you, it is good. I used to think distortion would necessarily be higher-gain than overdrive. But I think it's just a different type of gain than overdrive, and either can sound good at both low or high gain settings. Especially together . . . simultaneously.

I keep thinking one day I’ll buy a REDDI… I really don’t have a need for either though. The board is working fine for now and fits in the backpack easily.

My rig is fine as well. I just have a little itch I need to scratch. The REDDI isn’t small. It isn’t light. But it is the best DI a I’ve ever used at this point. I debated for a long time but to this point, it’s the best non bass gear purchase I have made.

Ive heard them REDDI’s live and it’s killer. I just don’t think my general audiences would appreciate the difference. I also don’t see it replacing a pre amp with an EQ for me, so therefore it would be an additional thing I would carry and we all know they ain’t small.

My nano board with a tuner, compressor and Bddi v2 is plenty to get me through any church/worship setting and then some, but I’ve always wanted to play through one, maybe one day!

Definitely notice on my IEM’s. That’s the main reason for it for me. I mean, FOH kills as well. My sound guy actually danced when I first played it. Our singer - who by no fault of her own - knows nothing really about gear turned and said wow.
That’s why the Infinity will really have to be amazing to get me to switch. Or maybe I use it as a preamp and drive through the REDDI. I’d like to use it on its own to minimize my footprint, but who knows.

I don’t have much experience with the REDDI. Only been around one a hand full of times, but it sounded great.

your board should be great in your IEMs. I run the Polytune, keeley bassist and a Sansamp and it sounds phenomenal in my ears and other people seem to like it too…

Not running a REDDi but with a Khan I definitely notice a difference. The first thing I used that I noticed a difference though was a LPF to roll off some high end. Then with an IR I was able to do the same thing. The tubes have an inherent roll off too so it adds to the goodness. These days I am running the IR in an HX Stomp and the Khan to add tube goodness. It was all in a quest to have decent tone in my IEMs. I don’t get to play through an amp so I want to have good tone in my ears when I’m playing.
