That's exactly why I ended up with a Stomp (and a MS-3 before that). I have a base sound I care about but for the occasional additional effect I am happy to compromise.

Exactly the approach I have adopted with my Stomp. Bass -> Amp (actually the Stomp and IEMs) then add in an effect if a song really calls for it. If I can get away with more attack just by shifting fingers or using a pick then so be it. The is not to say I am giving up effects, just dialing them back a bit as I was spending way too much time tweaking the tone.
So after complaining a bit yesterday, this morning I went down and modded a couple things and have 3 presets I'm going to use next weekend.
1) The studio tube DI, no amp or cab. 4:1 compression and a little hi cut/low cut eq. I have chorus, drive and filter as effects as that's all I'd use for about 6 songs.
2) I copied that and made another preset but without compression just for fun. Last time I wasn't compressed the band loved it.
3) I kept with the Ampeg SVTPro4 and SVT cab, same effects.
I might try an Aguilar in a similar manner. Keep the effects and change the amp/cab block(s) and see.

Got the comp put on the board finally. Rehearsal Wednesday to put it through the paces.
Another non Stomp option for me would be a Sushi Box Finally and a Broughton Hi/Low pass filter pedal. It would fit on my Nano and work pretty well.
Not a compressor per se but the tube emulation circuitry is supposed to emulate slight tube compression as well.
I get you there. I have started playing around with just guitar, compressor into a Rumble and using that as the DI / Pre-amp.. as it sounds really good. Debating if some of the pedals really add anything, or what they add is so minor it may not be that worthwhile and not noticeable in real situations, whilst nice to have, not necessary.
So today the favorite setting is tube DI, lo/hi pass filters at about 40 Hz and 12 kHz, no compression. Nothing but Roscoe preamp.
Not using a lot of the Stomps power. We'll see if effects are awesome on Saturday night or not. If effects are cool keep the Stomp. If not, maybe just get a Sushi box or something for a coupe hundred would probably be fine. Power it with my DC7. Or no tube and just use a new Genzler DI pedal. Idk.

Are you running the Super Pre EQ completely flat (as it appears in the pic)?
I have 3 memories programmed so far, using the BFT profile. I will modify the tone settings as needed to work with different basses. With the Sadowsky, I use the onboard preamp for any needed tone modification.
Same for me…I'd anticipated making a bunch of specific eq presets for each bass, but finding that my basses simply fall into only two categories: those that can use some SP top-end brightening (more sparkle)…or SP eq completely flat. So I made another preset that mirrors my primary preset, but also includes the default bright option.
That said, I could make the bright option be anything I want (both freq/db)…but the default setting (7kHz/8dB) works for me…
From there, prefer making minor tweaks with bass onboard controls.

So this is my current humble set-up. Sire M7 -> Spark Booster (for slight grit) -> Valeton GP100 (Tuner + Vol pedal + EQ + amp + IR). The compressors in my valeton are too artificial to use.
Is adding a dedicated compressor before my spark booster critical add some smoothness to my tone? Given I play clean 85% of the time and pretty much don't get a chance to slap during worship
