Ah I'm using the HX effects and I don't get along with it well. Everyone says it sounds great but to me it's missing something so I know exactly what you're saying. Maybe it's just in my mind but feels off. Or maybe I'm just old and not used to digital effects

Are you IEM only or do you have a cab to get some air as well?

IEM only. We have a sub on stage to try and give a little tactile feedback but it doesn't always work.

When I did the A/B at a gig, it was really close and I can see why people love the Stomp. But it was missing a little punch or presence or something. Maybe the feel wasn't the same. I just don't want to haul a $1K tube DI around for gigs if no one even notices the difference. I know it felt different to play the REDDI over the Stomp. I just don't want to haul it around just for me.

I have a couple amazing basses. It shouldn't take much to get their sound to FOH and IEM's.

But if you notice it and aren't happy with your sound then you're not going to be as comfortable or play as well.

Whatever I use ideally has to fit on my Nano board (because that fits between the feet of my synth stand) with my SR tuner and Rolls PMs 50 for my wired IEM's and be powered by my DC7. The Stomp does. But so would something like the new Genzler preamp/DI pedal.

It could just be thy with IEM's and lack of pumping subs I'm just missing some tactile feel. But again, I used a cheap DI at another gig when I didn't have the right power for my Stomp and the band thought I sounded awesome. Some cheap Whirlwind DI.

Maybe I need to start with using the Stomp as just a DI with an eq and compressor. Leave out all the amp and cab stuff.

I've got a preset that's basically a subtle comp with the tiniest bit of reel saturation that I'll send you @SteveC. No amp cab or drive. Might be something worth trying.

The Khan is where it's at. It's not cheap, but relative to other quality tube DIs it is. And as you say, it's smaller, lighter, and sounds great (better being subjective).

I am tempted to scrap everything and go tuner and passive DI. The more time I spend tweaking, the more frustrated I get. I know there's good sound in there, but I'm not getting it.

I do that every 6 months or so. It never lasts, but often resets my brain about what I want from pedals. Generally I end up scrapping 1 or 2 pedals that take me too far away from the tone I want and/or start using settings that bring me closer to that tone. YMMV.

EDIT: last time I did, I ditched an MXR M-87 comp in favor of a Keeley Comp pro and flattened the EQ of the only pedal that had one (VT Bass) and EQ'd only the amp.

I think it really depends on how close you are to the sound you're after with your bass.

Could you take two lines at your church? You could send one with everything and another one with just the DI/EQ/Comp and let the sound folks decide. They will just probably take the louder one

Can you voice what it is about your tone you are unhappy with? I know with my Stomp I have been less than satisfied with most downloaded patches as my bass has a fairly hot output. It have taken mostly to a "bass straight to amp" mentality in having a minimal patch with just a tube compressor, amp, and cab for blocks. A minimalist approach. I found that the more I added or tweaked I ended up down a hole that just didn't sound good anymore. I use one amp if I want clean and another if I want a driven tone.

I hear you brother! Just when we think we're satisfied with our tone, we start overthinking things.

Will the chase for tone never end?

I'm to the point that if you use the same rig / pedalboard / bass(es), etc., at different locations, the tone just ain't gonna sound the same as it did at the last place -- not exactly anyways.

I was at a gig last evening, for example, and I liked what I was hearing but really couldn't hear myself. So I kept gradually turning the bass up. Our sound guy tolerated it because he said it was better to hear the bass than not to hear it. I should have hugged him.

Anyways, every now and then, it's cool to hear the tone in your head through your rig, breathe deeply, smile, and enjoy the gig.

With those two Empress pedals…swapping out the REDDI for a Sushi Box Finally, I think you'd been tone/price-happy (and very tidy Nano pb)…

…you keep mentioning band approval. I doubt they really care (discerning ear-wise)…you're a great player, and that matters most…in the end, what do YOU want to hear?

I was thinking about this yesterday again. I could probably trim my entire board down and not miss a lot. I could buy a Nano and have everything I really need pretty easily. I could throw out my entire board and use just my Zoom B3 again or a tuner and my Ampeg SCR DI. But then I might want to add my VMT. And my Bass Chorus Deluxe. And my Bass Microsynth for that occasional hugeness. And add back my..... on and on.

Why do I feel the need to carry a pedal board full of stuff I use once in a while?

Because, options.

the same battle rages within over here. I climb the ladder, then i come back down only to climb a slightly tweaked ladder, then back down. I've landed on the principle that if I can responsibly afford to cover my favorite bases (different than ALL the bases), doing so removes the desire to play the ladder game.

I have thought about it. A lot will depend on if I want to use effects and if they make a difference live. If not, who knows. I could go Berg or just a simple Genzler preamp pedal.
