Our church is going to get one! We have a solid drummer every other week, but the off weeks are a crap shoot.
Not really joking either.

Trust me, you need compression.
I have had an MXR M87 on and off my board a couple times. It's currently off. I had it set so low that I couldn't really tell a difference when it was on or off. I suppose I could revisit using it. I didn't sell it when I took it off last time. I may finally be learning.
Try short attack and release times. That's with the controls clockwise. And a ratio of 8 dB. I like how it mimics tube amp compression. You can give it a little boost with the output level if you like. Use the input level with the LED meter to set a good threshold.
If you're like me and spent decades playing with no compression, it can take time getting used to. But now that I gave it a chance and I'm accustomed to the different feel, I feel like my tone suffers without one.

I just spent the last half hour, or so, dialing in my Cali again also the B3K and Providence Anadime Chorus (really NICE!!!). Ready to practice!

I operate one of these when the drummer can't make it. Takes a little while to get the hang of it but it works great once you're used to it.

Well, clockwise'ish maybe.
I do usually keep the attack up full, and the release a little slower, like around 3 o'clock. Experiment, as always.
The Jule is the only "preamp" as the others don't have tone controls. For DI only I would add the Radial JDI. I actually kept it after trying a REDDI.
You won't get a disagreement out of me. The three I mentioned I've used in church and I find I never use the tone controls of the Jule after the initial setup when I'm not using an amp. The Reddi pairs really well with a P bass, which is what the original poster has listed in his signature. With my Smith I've actually preferred my countryman depending on the repertoire, which I think is pretty similar to the JDI...
I might add the U5 to the list, although I can't say I have any no amp/church experience with it...
Smith/Countryman probably similar to Roscoe/JDI.
I hav had a couple U5's and they are awesome as well. Not quite a dream but yes have those selectable tone options. If it weren't so bulky I would probably still be using one. The JDI is so nice and compact yet feature filled.
