Worship Bass Pedalboards

About a year ago, playing with another church that provided separate performance tracks for each instrument in MusicStand, I started listening to the bass track. I was shocked at what I was hearing. You can put that much drive on in a church?

I was just talking to a friend about this yesterday. Got the multitracks practice bundle. Started listening to some of the bass tracks on the songs we do at church. Dang there is a LOT of drive! Everyone plays clean on the worship teams. Time to up the game with the bass sound.

As I started using a pick, heavy drive, fuzz, octaves and microsynth, the feedback from leadership and tech was very favorable. I got a hand written note from one WL saying he appreciated my deep dive into worship bass tone.

I've noticed a ton of drive on the isolated tracks too. It's surprising what's on some of the newer songs. Synth too. There was one service where I was playing more synth than bass.

Nice. My synth is getting used a lot. The service this Sunday is only the second service (since I got it) that I won't be using it. There is one section that is like 8 bars that I will cover with an octave pedal. And there is another song where it would sound great, but the bass part is more fundamental to the song. I think you'll get a lot of use out of it.

There is a lot of excitement on the team when we bring in new sounds. (There are a lot more synth songs being programed for example). We just got a sample pad for the drum booth, so we are talking about ways to bring that into the mix.

If you ever dig in to the tracks for the song Praise there are 3 individual bass tracks (in ADDITION to synth)!

It’s amazing how the “harshness” you hear from fuzz/heavy drives at home goes away in a live mix.

I am not a big fuzz/drive user, but I am starting to add a slight drive on more "rockin'" songs, like opening tunes or sending songs. Probably not going to use it during communion.

MID LEVEL : +/- 17 dB of cut or boost
=> Cut around 100Hz-200Hz for boominess / small rooms
=> Cut around 200Hz-300Hz for muddiness / vocals help
=> Boost around 500Hz-700Hz-900Hz-1kHz for definition
GAIN : Input sensitivity level = pot on "G" or "A" of GAIN
MASTER : Output level

The Ages is interesting and used prices are good. The clean blend seems to have no effect. It's a nice low gain drive tone. I was (and am) looking for a pedal replacement for the Tone Hammer AGS vibe. The Ages gets close.

Grats! More straightforward than you think. Just think of the couple of tones you want first and then focus on going for them, rather than just start moving knobs around

Very cool. That’s a great synth. Like @Blille said, a simple sine wave by itself and square wave with sub octave sine will cover most everything.

Very Helpful! Now have to figure out how to do that sustain pedal trick where the note resumes when he depresses the pedal without retriggering from the keyboard.

On the Moog, I'm assuming he's doing that with the CV (control voltage) jacks. I don't know if the Novation has CV jacks, but I'm wondering if it can be done with the sustain jack??

I don't know who Natalia Mafra is or where she plays but she brings a fearless approach to bass. (She uses the Tone Hammer and Bass Microsynth.) She does synth keys and musical director as well. I have total respect for this person.

Would love to hear more of this transition. Was thinking about doing the same thing. Just want to make sure you can get those deep Moog tones.

Btw another tip is that sometimes I use a tiny synth (Roland S1) instead of the Moog when I play like just 8 synth bars. To avoid running another line I plug it in the right input of the HX One and use a dummy effect that folds to mono.
