I remember playing an Ibanez 5-string in a music store in 1986, the first fiver I ever laid eyes on in the flesh. Jimmy "Flim" Johnson had been playing a custom Alembic fiver for a good while by that point as well. Didn't Alembic build the first fiver back in the late 70's for Johnson?

But once 1990 rolled around I remember 5-strings becoming an industry standard. I gigged with an Ibby fiver belonging to the lead player in a band I was in in the mid-90's, but never bought my own until a month ago...

I was a big fan of the Christian jazz/rock group, Sweet Comfort Band in the late 70's. Their bass player, Kevin Thomson, was playing an Alembic 5 at that time. Here's a clip from '77 as proof.

Slightly off topic, When did you first notice the 5 string bass in music? 1978 for me. Exposure by Peter Gabriel. I was like "What the hell kinda detuning is that?!?!?!?"

From what I've read on here and other sites, Fender built the first 5-er in the 60's (EADGC).
