I've been wanting to add a P bass pup to my stingray for a while now, but with no p bass to measure pup placement i cant tell if i will have to put the pup closer to the neck or not. All i really want to know is if the bottom half of the p will collide with the top coil or not.

Would adding a P pup to stingray allow it to be in the standard position?

There was thread about the same topic with graphics showing positions of a P, MM and jazz '60 and '70 placement a while ago. I can't find it right now, but try search it.
To answer the question ...they will collide, but I think they wouldn't without pup covers (if that may have sense). Maybe to put them under custom made cover (probably the ugly solution for stingray)

If you move it slightly you won't even notice it.
Also, you can install them in reverse, with the treble string coil closer to the neck. They sound more balanced that way.

I've done this twice. My tech measured the P position from the 12th fret and claims it is in the exact location as on a P-Bass. The two pickups touch each other. This set up rules! But you need to decide about PUP output. I have the MM wired passive/series and have used the SD SPB-3 for one and the Dimarzio Split-P on the other. These outputs match well.
My experience from routing a P body for a MM pickup was that the MM in the stingray position overlaps the P rout of the D/G coil by about a 1/4". SGD's recommendation to flip the D/G coil position to the neck side is a great one.
It'll be a few millimetres off but that is hardly noticable:

I don't know if it's just the angle of the picture, but it looks like the pole pieces don't align properly with the strings. Is this a problem for you?

You can either a) move the MM pickup closer to the bridge, easy. Or b) place the MM pickup and the EA coil of the P pickup where they normally go, then put the DG coil above it. You will need a new pickguard, but it should be really cool.
I'm actually doing that myself right now!
