I was just goofing around last night and found out that bending the G string so that you hold it against the side of the fretboard and the string rests on the tapered side of a fret creates a sitar-like sound. Then by slightly bending back and forth on the same spot (seems to work best around 10th - 15th frets), you can get the string to fret at different notes and end up with a sort of sitar sound with trills.
I'm sure the rum made it sound a whole lot more interesting than it really was, but my question is this: Does doing that wreck the string, nut, or anything else? I was doing it on a cheap Ibanez, so I'm not too worried, but I'm kind of wondering if it's something worth exploring or if it's death-to-bass.
