Would I be better off buying a mic or a DI box?

I don't have any problems with feedback and I can't recall ever tripping over a mic stand. Nothing you can do with a DI can ever sound like an SVT -> 810... It just can't. I'd be bummed if I had to go full DI unless my amp was broken or something. IMO, the audience does know. They might not know if I boosted the mids a little more one night vs another but they'd know if I went straight DI.

i'm hoping the vt deluxe is going to take care of that for me. still too early to tell, though.

it is pretty rad...does a great job of simulating the tones. but it's the first time i ever tried using a vt as a di, and i'm still trying to clear up it being overly bright. sounded great on a few gigs, sounded overly bright on one...but i think i've got it figured out now.

I use an SVT and a Countryman DI and use the speaker level on the DI.

I have been playing Bass for over 30+ years. My main rig is a Rickenbacker along with Taurus Moog pedals. I can say with out a doubt, Direct is the best option. The punch of the Rickenbacker along with the sub-freq. of the pedals comes thru great. The key is to make sure you get a "Active" DI. Don't get the "passive" box. I've recently got hold of a "musicman" Stingray 5 string. This also comes thru with a whole new sound. I was impressed with Stringray very much.

funny you should mention about "not " getting a passive DI,because when I had my SR5 I got an Active DI,and hated it because I thought it was wayyy over the top because the SR5 already that sizzle at the top end ,but a passive DI smooth it out tremendously !

Yup, I had an 18V Dingwall ABII5 running through a J48 for a little bit. way, way too much. The JDI is way more prefect for hot active basses like Dingwall, Spector, SR's, etc..
