Would YOU consider taking a gig like this?

So in perusing my local Craigslist I came across this sub gig offer. Would you consider taking on a gig like this given the conditions?

Interested in a working vacation - Bass Player Needed (Fire Island Pines)

Fire Island Pines Arts Project (FIPAP) is looking for a last minute replacement Bass Player for our production of You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown over Labor Day Weekend. Our theatre is located in The Pines on Fire Island. We are a two hour commute from the city accessible by public transportation or car. If you have never been to Fire Island, you are in for a treat. The Island is only accessible by Ferry from Sayville, NY. There are no cars on the Island — just wooden boardwalks. We have an 170 seat proscenium house with a very small stage. The bass part is written for both an upright and electric bass.

Commitment dates: Monday, August 26 - Monday, September 2 (you can go home after the performance on September 1 if needed). Two performances only on Saturday, August 31 and Sunday, September 1 at 6PM. There will be a CLOSED dress rehearsal on Friday, August 30 at 7PM (for cast friends, underwriters, and FIPAP Board Members only). See schedule attached (IGNORE the red TECH notes on the schedule — you are not required during those times).

Since this is a benefit for FIPAP, we are, unfortunately, unable to pay a salary, but we do provide transportation to/from the Island, housing and all meals while you are with us on the Island. Housing will be at a host’s home in a shared room with another pit member. Lunch/Dinner is catered each day and we will provide a stipend for breakfast items. You would be catching the 11:20AM Ferry on Monday, August 26th to the Island. This is really a working vacation and a perfect gig for someone who wants to get away for a week. There is time to go to the beach, sit by the pool, relax, etc.

A week of work, in a shared room, for no money? 😂

In his book “For Guitar Players Only,” Tommy Tedesco said it perfectly: “When you take a job, it should have one or more of these qualities: good money, fun, connections for the future, learning. If it doesn't have any of these, forget it.

And if you didn't already know who Tommy Tedesco was, look him up and watch The Wrecking Crew documentary. ✌️

Oh look...another "great experience"/"Exposure" gig. No pay and tons of hassle? Sounds great.

A WEEK's work for a commercial production with *zero* pay? Not without seeing the full balance sheets to see who *is* making money (which they obviously wouldn't share).

BUT, and this is a *big* but, IF I had my OWN room, and they could even pay a *nominal* amount, I would consider it just for the experience. It's fine to say it's a week's vacation, but those things they call bills keep coming out every month, so unless you have paid vacation time from your work, you're *losing* money doing this, just in terms of the opportunity cost.

And for them, you get what you pay for. If it's a proper commercial production, they should be paying at least the minimum fair market rate.

If I cover the violin/viola chair (scale plus 15% for the double) AND the bass chair (an additional 10% double for one bass, and another 10% for the additional DB/BG double if required), it might be worth it.... let's see....hmmmmm... What's 135% of 0?

Still a hard no. Show stuff requires a skill set that typically also leans towards having to be in the union (which I HATE, but that's political discussion and I'll refrain from further elucidation). How in the world are they expecting to put together a competent pit at the last minute....paying nothing...and ruling out the vast majority of folks who could do the gig well who wouldn't be allowed to accept the gig due to union restrictions in the first place?

Much confuse. Very headache.
