Yes, they both were failed regimes that had racial policies. Only one participated in genocide.
Slavery was an absolutely abhorrent institution, and no one in their right mind would ever recognize or defend it. It is a terrible chapter in American history, no doubt about it.
I am northern born and raised, but I had ancestors on both sides in the War between the States. No used to rehash a war

I personally do not display the Stars & Bars. I do not care if someone else does. Freedom of speech. I do believe one can have southern pride and not be an evil person.

Yes. But I'm from a small town in midwest Georgia. It doesn't offend me, and I don't view it as a racial thing. It's just an old battle flag to me.
And this is a good example of how the flag is not an equally "loaded" symbol to all. When I flew that flag in my early/mid twenties, all it meant, really, was "I like beer." The intent was no different than flying a Jolly Roger -- which most of us would see as benign and simply theatrical (unless, of course, a family member had been killed by Somali pirates ..)
Not at all similar, unless you think that the Conferates killed 6,000,000 people.

I would play the gig if paid, but i doubt my jazz trio would get booked at a place like that 
But i live in Richmond, VA, and seeing that flag is common enough not to be strange around here. I'm actually surprised at the outrage about it, i thought it was just a symbol rednecks used to represent their southern heritage.

It seems to me that the body count is not just that of the Civil War, but rather, the total due to slavery, or on this topic perhaps the total due to slavery from the time that the United States existed until Federal troops enforced the end of slavery in Texas after the Civil War was over.
We don't know exactly what either number is, but it's certainly large enough to meet the definition of genocide.
As for the Holocaust, the number you mention is usually considered accurate just for murdered Jews in Europe, the overall number considerably higher depending on exactly how you define it. It's gone up in recent years due to research and excavations of mass graves in the former Soviet Union.

Forgive me, but I do not respect your position. I think that's pretty shameful and shows a lack of moral center.
Like the guy from Saskatoon said, here in Canada that flag usually means one thing: racist redneck. If I saw pics of your band in front of it I'd probably realize it's just part of the bar's decor. A lot of people wouldn't realize that though. Then again a lot of people probably wouldn't care or even notice. I'd say do the gig unless you're actually planning to get pro shot video or photographs done there.
for a forum that likes to toot its own horn about knowing facts and not judging others there sure is a lot of BS going on in this thread.
You see, one was a heritage-obsessed state that propagated ideas of eugenics and racial superiority and used structural and economic problems as casus belli for starting a war and whose supporters, realizing the unpopularity of their thoroughly failed and defeated ideology, continue to use its symbols but lack the courage and basic intellectual honesty to admit what those symbols mean.
The other was Nazi Germany.
Yup...just another gig in my eyes. Passing judgement on someones decor is not my deal and besides speaking about morality issues in an establishment where im sure half or more of the people get behind the wheel of their autos legally intoxicated seems a bit paradoxical to me....
