Would you take this gig?

A while back I decided to give up gigging altogether... no more concerts, festivals, benefits or church gigs. I must admit, it's been a peaceful couple of months.

A few weeks ago, a drummer friend of mine stopped by my office and told me he wanted to put together a funk band. Apparently in his mind, I'm the only choice for bass. He asked if I was interested and I didn't commit to anything. I just told him to keep me in the loop.

Fast forward to this past weekend, and he's put together a pretty decent lineup of musicians. He also sent me the potential setlist. Granted, this list is a starting point, but you can see where he's going with it. Sound system is set. 1-2x per month gig starting in 2024, so nothing crazy.

Based on this list of tunes, would you take the gig?

Some very cool tunes there, for sure.
I certainly wouldn't say no based on that list...but obviously there's more than just a setlist to consider in getting out there again.

There's certainly enough good music on that list to commit to a get together and see how things go. You could always opt out if any of your other red flags come up.

I'd be very upfront and transparent about what YOUR needs are and what has turned you off from gigging in the past.

Are you up for it? Are the reasons you hung it up in the first place going to resurface quickly?

The idea of being in a working band may be appealing but the execution can be hard work as i'm 100% sure you know already.

If leaning towards it set a time frame and share it with the BL - You'll try this this for 6 months or whatever and re-evaluate. Stay in control and always demand the option of firing the drummer..

Yeah, I feel like it’s a fun list of tunes. I’ll likely go to a rehearsal and feel it out. As long as it can be kept to a couple times a month at some decent venues, it might be the right gig. I guess we’ll see.

Agreed. The drummer is tight. Singer’s good & also plays sax. It could be a real good times party band. And it’s exactly my style.

I think my biggest fear is that we’re good & it turns into more commitment... Tough problem to have, lol.

This set list is a bass player's dream IMO - I'd take it in a heartbeat as long as the other players can do the material justice, and there were strong vocals.

Years ago I got recruited off the bench to play a nude square-dance. I was playing upright. The set list was easy and standard. One of the guys was concerned there wasn't "a b@njo big enough." I love telling that story. Anyway, would you take that gig?

Good set list, but I'd need to know what kind of gigs and support.

Like if it's show up with a bass, plug into a backline amp and play, on a real stage with good monitors and decent pay, sure.

If I've got to haul a lot of gear and set up on makeshift stages with crummy monitoring for iffy pay, nah, I got enough on my plate.

That's what I came here to say! A band that can truly knock those tunes out of the park should be in serious demand, once word got out. Make sure that the rest of the band, if not the guy booking it, are on board with your intended availability. If they're not, nip it in the bud now.

Nope, but I wouldn’t take any dance oriented gig at this point, especially oldies.

A setlist wouldn't make me join a band. Steady gigs wouldn't do it for me either. Ive got to enjoy the people and the music. There needs to be little drama, there's almost never no drama, but that poopie needs to be at a minimum.
