+1, although anyone I'd trust a bass to, would probably give me a couple of six packs!

Now, if you really need the money maybe it's something to consider, although it's not something I would recommend with any bass that you have any sentimental feeling for. You need to expect worse case, i.e. bass comes back knocked around and worse for wear.

I'd also write a simple contract that outlines, what you expect before, during and post rental - summarizing payment, return condition, repair cost, damages, etc. Sounds like overkill, but you might be glad of it. Of course this all starts to go into too hard basket!

i definitely voted for carrots. But no i wouldn't rent it to someone. If a friend needed it i'd let him borrow it for free under the condition i'd strangle him if something happened to it

...well, ordinarily, no. In 99% of potential cases I'd give them the phone number of the local rental joint.

HOWEVER - I have been known to do some really nifty-neato mods on my basses and six-strings, so in the event that I was approached by a pro or semi-pro player who had heard my axes (or heard of them), wanted specifically my tone for a big show or session, and was willing to shell out seirous money (and credit) for the use of what is essentially a one-of-a-kind instrument, I would definitely consider it - not only to make money, but also because I understand what it is to be a tone-freak.

Hey, when you gotta have that tone, you gotta have it. If my axe is all that will give it to you, and I can see that you treat your own gear well, then let's talk.

Never, ever, to anyone.

If I trusted them enough, I'd lend it for a gig, but rent it out, no, not a chance.

And everyone that I trust enough to lend it to has more than enough gear of their own, so probably wouldn't ask to borrow mine.

I'd loan (rent) out my CIJ Jazz or Precisions - in fact, I have before - although I did get my P back with a strap-lock washer missing, and my buddy only borrowed it for ONE live performance...that really sucked...You know how hard it is to find that size washer!? I went to TWO different home depots and TWO different Ace Hardwares and still never found the right size. I'd lend out either of my Squiers too, no problem.

They're certainly all replaceable enough.

No way I'd let anyone use my 1962 Precision OTOH. It's just too irreplaceable (especially for the price I paid for it). If anything were to ever happen to it (god forbid) I'd want it to be fault of my own and not someone else.

Yes, and on the advice of Judge Wapner I would get an agreement in writing to make sure the renter knew who was paying for damage or loss.

I think it depends. Maybe if I owned several basses. However, if the question/poll is asking about my #1 bass, then the answer might be "no".

I have actually borrowed severl of my basses over the years to different bands that I knew, but just for recording. However, I have a couple of my basses that I would most certainly rent out.

I'm just very OCD when it comes to my instruments - I don't let anyone play them.

Some of my others I would consider renting, but I would also have to secure a 'guarantee' to make sure they remained in proper condition and were returned as such.

No! Years ago, I made the mistake of loaning an amp to a so-called friend only to have it returned with the speaker completely shredded with no apology or offer to repair.
