Theoretically, wouldn't the resonance not be as good with so much wood missing if it were compared with a bass with the same pickup locations?

Mike Pope's idea is a little more elegant.

On my GAS list is a Stambaugh bass with a J pickup in the 60's position and 70's position that I can switch between.

I'd like to see that setup with a motor that you can adjust oscillation speed on that moves the pickup back and forth, that would be interesting to play and hear.

It would be better to just put in 3 fixed puckups each with a on off toggle and a volume and tone control.

No it wouldn't, you can slide the pickup way down near the bridge where you wouldn't want one normally and the bite on it is amazing, similarly, you can get amazing big woody dubness from sliding right up to the neck, again, somewhere I wouldn't want to have a pickup all the time.

I know it's kooky looking, but I like the fact that such a beautifully finished instrument has this huge home made looking anomaly in it..And it's still a work in progress..

If he had only re-angled the tailpiece so the G string anchor is closer to the bridge saddle (without interference on the back edge of the bridge chassis, of course) for more down force and more sustain, and the E anchor farther away for less break angle and better tone.

After seeing the quality of work done with Bootsy's Space Bass I would have expected a bit more ingenuity with the sliding pickup cavity.

it would be cool for recording in the studio, like a secret weapon... but i wouldn't use that as my main bass with that odd looking unless i really need all that variety of tones...

It's OK: nobody looks at the bass player anyway!

They must have gotten the idea from the Westone rail bass or the Fodera Viceroy just like they got the "idea" for the Streamer from the Spector NS2.

That bass sounds a lot better than I thought it would! But I definitely don't need that many tone options, I would drive myself crazy sliding pickups and turning knobs..

I think it looks ugly and it sure does add an overwhelming amount of tone options. I think it is in overkill territory.

Perhaps a row of pickups with independent on off switches would look a little better (still ugly though).

I did this to get more tone options:

It used to be a Peavey Millennium J/J but this one didn't sound good as is - which was a bummer because I used to own one and it did sound good as is.

The neck pickup is an SGD Sidewinder and the other two are SGD Neo's. It's passive with a V/B/T setup. The tone is connected to a decade switch (like a varitone without the inductor) with a bypass, 0.01, 0.022, 0.033, 0.047, and 0.1uf capacitors. The 4pdt mini toggle is a series/single/parallel switch for the two Neo humbuckers.

The last knob is a pickup pair selector. Setting one gives me the neck pup as "neck" and middle pup as "bridge". Setting two gives me the neck pup as "neck" and bridge pup as "bridge". Setting three gives me the middle pup as "neck" and bridge pup as "bridge". Finally, setting four gives me the neck pup as "neck" and middle + bridge pups as "bridge".
