Wow! Didn't expect to see that

Last night was date night. My wife really loves our local Duran Duran tribute act (and in fairness, I like 'em too). We hadn't seen them for a couple years (yay for gigs being back) and they were playing last night so we schlepped almost an hour to their gig. They have a new guitarist and a new bassist since the last time we saw them. For context, their previous bassist played a MIM Fender active PJ. So, I was a bit surprised to see this set up on stage before they came on:

I know it's not a great picture, but that's a Dingwall Combustion and a Kubicki Factor.

Sweet gear!

Other than tuning it before the show, he didn't touch the Dingwall. I guess it's the backup. Nice backup.

For the record, the Kubicki sounded great.

I owned a light blue Kubicki in the early '90's. Sold it to a good friend but it was subsequently stolen from his apartment along with a Fender P. The P Bass was recovered but the Kubicki was not.

Radio Duran.

This was a two-band show, the other band being a Talking Heads tribute called True Stories. Had not seen True Stories before, but they were excellent. The two bands shared some of the same people (keys and drums). The True Stories bassist played a pretty sweet Rickenbacker—no pedalboard, just straight into a Rumble, probably a 500 but maybe a 200.

It was at Concert Pub North, kind of in your neck of the woods. Well, not quite, but north of the beltway, anyway.

Yep. I know the place well. My wife and I used to drop in regularly. I played there once several years ago. That band fizzled quickly, and my later bands didn't fit that venue. They're very oriented toward tribute bands. I have noticed they seem to have almost "house bands" who rotate through personnel.

I'll keep an eye out for both bands!

Kubicki is the authentic Duran Duran Live Aid look...

Always feel a little bit smug using mine when my 80's band play Duran Duran tracks, but no one has ever noticed what I'm playing... I think even the band were more impressed with the previous bass player's Status, as it was something they recognised, vs my obscure Kubicki.

JT played Kubickis in the Power Station days, and today he's playing Dingwalls after finally retiring the Cirrus he's played for the last several years. A four, and as previously, a 5-string Dingwall on 'Reach Out for the Sunrise' with those long stretches where he chugs along on low D's.

All that guy needs is an Aria SB to round it out.

Cool, that is not to far from me. Might have to head out that way one night.
