Brad Johnson, all of my posts have been phrased as questions asking for further clarification(granted my first post was a lil accusatory, but a question none the less), because due to the tone of Funk's post's I felt that he was disregarding an important issue that coincided with the subject matter of the thread topic.

However instead of answering the question directly in a concise adult fashion, funk and yourself felt the need to belittle the entire TB community, never realizing that your posts may possibly be misconstrued, and judging by your critiscism, I don't think I'm the first to misread the meaning one of funk's or your posts.

oh and I didn't respond to Dr. Cheese's first paragraph, because I didnt feel the need to. It was self explanatory and we both agree on the issue at hand, should I have given him a thumbs up?

You seem to think that Im ignoring the obvious, while I think you are looking at things at face value without looking into the real purpose of the statements, that disregarded an entire civil rights movement simply because it is Illegal.

Dr. Cheese, I never thought that you were against same sex marriages, it was the way I read funkadelics post, and the way he chose not to distinquish whether he was for or against. Which lead me to the assumption that he was against same sex marriage, and just didn't wan't to expose that information.

I know for a fact, in Delaware JoP's are voted into position, and they have an obligation to deny any marriage request that they feel is wrong(usually they reguire counseling or an extended waiting perioid). The appointment system may be different in Va. but Im pretty sure the job description is the same. But frankly I'm a lil burnt out on this topic to do the required research. Lazy I know, but it's been a long day

I think Mike V summed up this entire thread rather concisely.

With respect to comparing same-sex marriages to mixed-race marriages:

I think you guys (both sides) are discussing this on two different levels. Dr. Cheese and Funkdamental seem to be discussing the sheer illegality of the act of denying people who have the legal right to be married that right. I feel they are right.

Happynoj and casualmadness seem to be arguing that denying same sex couples the right to marry is wrong, legality aside. I feel they are right, too.

And, for me personally, I think the situations are pretty much synonymous.

A justice of the peace in Louisiana refuses to marry white/black couples. This was settled in by the Supreme Court in 1967. Why does this man still have a job?

Bizarre. I think it proves that it often does not take reason or a sense of justice to actually be a justice of the peace. The man is a remnant of a (thankfully) dying breed.

All in good fun ZombieBrains....poor taste, maybe, but in good fun. I think it's ok to poke fun, with good intentions, at cultural, racial...etc differences as long as you are willing to poke fun at your own and not take offense but ONLY if you have no bad intent. I know not everyone agrees with that so if I offended anyone I apoligize but most people here are adults, they can take it and know humor from degredation. Maybe it's just the way I was brought up....Born and raised in southwest Louisiana (Lafayette) us cajuns make fun of ourselves more than anyone else. Look up Poo Poo Brousard or Boudreaux and Thibadeaux or the cajun onstar video.

a lil? Ya think.
:D

Very dramatic. Do you somehow consider yourself representative of the entire TB community?

I know my post can be misconstrued and almost without exception they're misconstrued by people who can't or won't read for content. "I know how this guy thinks, I see lots of words, I'm sure he must be saying this!" That's exactly how it comes off. Time after time, with me repeatedly pointing to what they're screwing up in their heads, the point eventually gets across... or the thread is closed.

oh and I didn't respond to Dr. Cheese's first paragraph, because I didnt feel the need to. It was self explanatory and we both agree on the issue at hand, should I have given him a thumbs up?

You agree with what he said, which Dr. Funkdamental agreed with but you still assign negative intent to Dr. Funkdamental?

Interesting.

You seem to think that Im ignoring the obvious, while I think you are looking at things at face value without looking into the real purpose of the statements, that disregarded an entire civil rights movement simply because it is Illegal.

In the context of this thread, one was legal and one was not. Pretty simple. Dare I ask if you understand that?

The obvious thing both doctors (;)) did was explain the law without making a judgement. You still don't seem to get that.

B]Dr. Cheese[/B], I never thought that you were against same sex marriages, it was the way I read funkadelics post, and the way he chose not to distinquish whether he was for or against. Which lead me to the assumption that he was against same sex marriage, and just didn't wan't to expose that information.

I think you're correct, it was the way you read his posts. Nothing more. What I read said that he AGREED with Dr C and clearly said NOTHING against it and only stated the obvious.

Wow...See what happens when you stay off and practice? :D I think Brad summed up my posts rather nicely. Funny thing is, you pretty much validated my last statement. That and the other fact that in alot of discussions ppl will read already with an opinion in mind, and it doesnt take much alot of times but one read until theyre off to the reply button with out even a clear understanding. Typed mood misunderstanding is different than blatant misreading, and this maybe sound condescending, but unless they edit, the post doesnt go anywhere allowing you to make sure you read what you actually read. :)
As for me talking about stating fact and being grouped with opinion, you can just look in the Bassists forum easily for evidence of why I say this about TB. When someone says they dont care for bass player A, ppl always assume dont care for=you think they suck.

As far as gay marriage, I left my opinions out because 1.) I like for threads to stay on track. 2.) Just because you have an opinion doesnt always mean you need to voice it.

I appreciate your attempt to steer the thread on course, but I think that this comparison is both fairly on topic (the marriage rights of two different types of minority couples) and an interesting tangent to the discussion (assuming it can stay a discussion, that is).

Honestly mike, Ive hardly ever been able to express how I feel on the issue without major assumptions, misunderstandings, and flaming due to my religious beliefs. Funny thing is, if ppl heard me out, they'd be surprised. Unfortunately seeing as understanding looks seldom 'round these parts, you gotta know when to hold em, and Im holdin' em. :)

Sorry. I reread and realized that it is entirely addressed to you, but it was supposed to be aimed at the handful of people still following this thread. To that end:

In college my band played an AIDS benefit at the university. During the intermission (and right before we were to start playing), there was a not-so-provocative striptease done by a dude in drag who ended up taking off his shirt to reveal a bra. One of the employees called the law and they shut the event down with 10-15 cops.

A friend videotaped the aftermath and in it he "interviewed" another (african american) friend of ours. When asked "what did you see?", Jerold's response was

"People oppressing that gay dude. We've been preaching it for years and y'all just didn't want to listen."

Maybe I was naive in my youth, but I just didn't see the parallel until he said that. Today, I see a lot of similarities in the treatment by the rest of society and the struggle for a level playing field. Discrimination is still obvious in the workplace and everyday life. The traditional gay stereotype is continued in nearly every role where a gay character is present, people still get beat for their sexual orientation, the slurs are still used to demean (and have been adopted by the target group), etc, etc, etc.

I find it an interesting and accurate comparison. I guess that's all my point was.

Mike
