Writers

In the spirit of Bacharach, Barry Manilow.

There's the story Stanley Clarke told of ribbing Barry, after Barry asked him why people don't take home more seriously, by saying, "They take you seriously, you wrote 'Mandy'!"

Upon which Manilow played very fast smoking version of Giant Steps on the piano. He related it in a Bass Player interview.

Barry Manilow did write many of the songs he recorded but he did not write "Mandy" nor did he write "I Write The Songs".

"Mandy", originally titled "Brandy", is a song written and composed by Scott English and Richard Kerr. "Brandy" was originally a hit in 1971 for Scott English in the UK and in 1972 for Bunny Walters in New Zealand.

"I Write the Songs" was written by Bruce Johnston of The Beach Boys 1977. The original version was recorded by The Captain & Tennille.

Well make sure to tell Stanley Clarke when you see him, I was only relating his story.
