WW inspiration for internship/apprenticeship

Hi all, my first post here so apologies if I’m doing anything wrong. Recently at my job at a local music store, I encountered my first WW amp and was incredibly inspired. After some searching it seems he is no longer as responsive to calls or emails so I plan on sending him a letter soon. Anywho, the point of this post is to ask how I could best go about finding someone like Walter for a mentor. I’m 16 and have been into electrical engineering for a long time, and am trying to develop my skills and connections. Walter would be an incredible choice because he works in the exact field I would hope to, and he also has a very good reputation. That being said though, I’m not sure that he would be interested. My reason for asking here is that some of you seem to know him, and also may have some insight on the industry. Any responses or ideas are appreciated :)
 
There are bass amp designers who post almost everyday on TalkBass. You might make some good connections by posting something similar in the Amps section. Also you might consider not limiting yourself to a single mentor. There are seriously great designers already here.

Thanks for the quick response! I’ll try posting this in the amps section, and for sure I won’t limit myself to just one mentor. The more help from professionals the better! :)

You say that you are 16 and have been into "electrical engineering" for a long time... perhaps you are misunderstanding what electrical engineering is and how long it takes to become one? I think that MAYBE you mean that you have been interested in electronics as a hobby and would like to learn more. Once you graduate from high school, you can then pursue an education in electrical engineering (another 4-5 years).

You have a point! I did just join last night but will certainly be spending some time looking through past threads. Also to your comment about my misunderstanding of what electrical engineering is, you also have a point. I think I didn’t word my original post as well as I could have. I have been limited to pursuing electronics as a hobby because of being in high school, but have been following it as a hobby for at least 6 years. Granted I only relatively recently gained more significant levels of knowledge on the theory of electronics, but I feel passionate about the field. My goal in finding a mentor is not to instantly get a job or jump right into the field, but to rather expand my knowledge so that I can go into college more prepared. I appreciate the response!
 
This is a lifelong path. Start by reading books on electronics and amp design. Soak up all you can. What engineering teaches you is how to learn on your own and how to solve problems.

As for which books, perhaps start here:

As for a mentor, your best bet is to look for a local ham radio club and ask if someone is available to help. It doesn’t need to be specifically audio amp design, it can be anything electronics related.

Read, read, read all you can about BASIC theory and beware of those who go down the rabbit hole of bizarre ideas. There are a lot of crackpots out there who believe in alternate theories that have no basis in reality.

Also, study your math because you will need it!
 
Do study your math. Some folks find it hard, but for engineering, its necessary. Engineering is applied physics, and mathematics is the language in which physics is done. Then, learn what all those things inside the amps are, and what they do.

In one of my electronics courses, my lab partner was a guy who had been a ham radio aficionado for years. In a lab, he was amazing. He literally understood all the bits and pieces and what they did to the signal going through them.

But above all, study the math. I’m a retired math and science teacher, and I can’t recall how many times I had a student tell me they didn’t need to study some subject. I would then ask them what they wanted to do with their lives. Often they would say something like, “I’m going to be a veterinarian.” They obviously hadn’t thought about the fact that, while a vet doesn’t do a lot of calculations everyday, but math and high grades are used to select which students are admitted to vet school, or engineering school, etc.

I've been very lucky to find a wide variety of great technical mentors over the years. In all honesty, the ones outside of the musical electronics field have been at least as valuable as the (many) inside it. I think I'd be asking myself "what would Mr. Woods be studying right now if he were just starting out?", and I would try finding that out by writing him a letter, something old school but also pretty out of the box. I was also heavily into the electronics hobby at age 16, tinkered with amps, made some guitar effects, etc. But at the same time, I took a strong interest in math and science. And then... along came the personal computer and changed everything. Yes I'm that old. ;) And I ended up actually majoring in math and physics and continuing for a graduate degree in physics. Today I work alongside engineers, but I don't call myself an engineer.

One thing that any old fart like myself knows from experience is that you will change, and the world will change, as you progress through your education. So on the one hand it's great to have an interest that motivates you to learn and explore. At the same time, it's also worth accumulating the broadest and most general purpose knowledge possible, so that you have the option of changing your interests later if something really cool suddenly jumps out at you. I think the more broad and general knowledge is more resilient to change. Entire classes of technology have come and gone during my lifetime, but math and physics have remained my steady companions through those changes. Today, programming is probably one of those fundamentals too -- the skill remains the same even as the tools evolve. You owe it to yourself, to see if you can learn to program.

And in an area that's somewhat esoteric, like musical amplification, there probably aren't any good textbooks that are up to date. So an engineer has to come up with their own textbook so to speak, and that means being able to build up theory from the foundations. For instance I think there are probably only a handful of engineers who even know what the real world operating conditions for a bass amp consist of, or what measurements are important.

Don't ever downplay your tinkering skills. That's really valuable, and will serve you in any field. If you start doing cool stuff, no matter how humble, consider blogging about it. Communicating ideas is a big part of what good engineers do.
 
When I ran a busy repair shop, some young guy would walk in the door about once a week, inquiring about an apprenticeship. Very few of them had any preparation, and fewer still had even started acquiring their own tools. A few of them suggested they expected to be paid.

It was very easy to establish that those guys were going to drain away a lot of my time, extract a price from my tools, and offer pretty much nothing in return. Those guys got a gentle but firm explanation of the nature of an apprenticeship, from both perspectives.

In other words, when someone offers a working man a crappy, one-sided deal, it is really easy to blow them out the door. A very easy and quick decision!

A few guys showed up with some tools, some examples of their first efforts on beaters, and a plan. And the plan included some compensation for my efforts. That compensation did not involve money, but they understood that they were asking for something of value (my time), and they understood that there needed to be some sort of opposite reaction, not necessarily equal, but they had to try.

Those guys got what they asked for, because they knew how to ask! One of those guys will get my business when I fully retire, several of them got legit jobs in the "industry". I never found out what happened to all the guys looking for what amounted to a free lunch.

Don't ask a working man for a free lunch. He hasn't got time. You need to convince him that you are a good place to invest his time, and that you will in some way make his life easier for his having done so. That means a lot of hump work, whatever that may be in the electronics trade.

Well said. One guy who apprenticed with me just did car system installs and another mostly merely answered the phone (which can be huge), but both ended up with long careers in the music business or engineering, or both.
 
Holy crap, thanks for all the replies! I didn’t expect this much of a response so fast, and I really appreciate all of you giving me advice and helpful information. About work with designing amps, I’m not certain that’s the specific work I would like to do. So far I’ve only made a fair bit of guitar pedals and have an ongoing DIY modular synth project. I plan to fully graduate from high school and to major in electrical engineering in college. As many of you have said, a mentor in almost any field of electrical engineering would be incredibly helpful. Thanks to this I’m able to look in all sorts of places! I have looked on some local discussion boards and such for anyone with similar interests, but haven’t had any luck just yet. I do however plan to spend some time looking at facebook groups to see if there is a local club. And of course, I definitely have no expectation of a mentor to provide me with anything other than their knowledge and shared passion. I have a set of mid-level tools for most electronics jobs, and if different ones are needed I’d make sure to buy them rather than try to use my mentor’s. I currently have a copy of the Digital Logic IC Handbook that I’m making some good progress on. You are of to a good start with your first post, Snadman. If you stick around TB for even a little while, you will quickly realize that a couple of the members offering you guidance are serious heavyweights in the field you want to enter! Take advantage of it. If someone like agedhorse makes a suggestion, follow it, whether it makes sense to you right now or not. He will probably forget more about amp design before he goes to bed tonight than I will will learn in my lifetime! Also, FWIW, the advice fdeck gave you is absolutely priceless and you should take it to heart. In any case, welcome, best of luck to you, and I hope someday people are talking about your amps on TB! :thumbsup:

Unfortunately I have met more than a few accredited engineers that have zero practical experience in the real world, and keep trying to re-invent the wheel. Understand that what looks good on paper doesn't always translate well in practice. Learn as much as you can from successful designs, and learn even more from examining failed designs, hopefully the failed designs of others. This will help prevent you from trying to re-invent the wheel.

Repairing equipment will give you much insight into circuit design, and will help you to understand better the application of electronic theory you will be studying. Learn your theory inside out and backwards. This will set you apart from the tinkerers that know only enough to be dangerous.

A couple of books that you may want to consider starting with:
Basic Electronics by Bernard Grob
Transistor Circuit Approximations by Albert P. Malvino

I had these as textbooks in high school electronics, and were excellent resources.

Great point! Luckily I happened to get into electronics through tinkering and repairing thing, and only in the past 2 years started properly learning more theory. Those book suggestions sound interesting, I’ll check them out!
