Xaviere "Slick" SLPB Basses

Further rooting around on the SlickGuitars.com website reveals the following info:

SLICK BRAND PRODUCTS ARE DISTRIBUTED INTERNATIONALLY BY
BB STONE & SONS
1520 JANGGI-DONG
415-060 GIMPO CITY, GYUNGGI-DO
KOREA

Hardly conclusive proof, but I'm taking that as a possible indicator that the guitars and basses are Korean-made. The B. B. Stone & Sons website describes the company as doing "OEM business with many kinds of musical instruments":

(Maybe not, though; just noticed the following text on the website: The music market in China is growing up rapidly. We have developed Chinese products with competitive power so that we keep pace with world’s trends. So maybe the factory is actually in China.)

I wish I lived on a street call "Janggi-dong"... though the B. B. Stone website transliterates it as "Jangki-Dong," which is even cooler.

I could of course be wrong, but the days of super-cheap Korean instruments are pretty much over. If they're retailing for under $300, I'm betting these are Chinese or Indo/Viet/etc..

There are some more pretty pictures of the Slick SLPB basses at the SlickGuitars.com website:

Most of the pics are the same as shown on the GuitarFetish.com website, but there are a few that show a little more detail of the finish on the basses, like this one:

Ugh, that is not attractive. Looks like flat black spray paint that someone irregularly cut back with some sandpaper.
This is a much better look.

I am now really digging the brown one, since if it looks THAT bad, it may be easier to sand it back and restain it with a Minwax amber poly sealer or something.

Aside from a setup, the first thing I'd do is get a tone control on it.

I was thinking roughly the same thing. The brown finish looks to be nicely un-abused, but if there were any wear through spots that were overdone, a bit of minwax polyshades antique walnut rubbed on with a rag would probably take care of it.

Well,I went ahead and pulled the trigger on one. Got it on Wednesday(Jan.27). Got the ivory one
Was OK right out of the box. Frets ok. Lowered the action a tiny bit. Pretty decent quality. No major flaws.
Now here's where people are gonna scoff! The damn thing sounds amazing! Solid bottom like an old P with nice highs like a 70's. BIG sound!
Did one jingle session and two gigs with it. The engineer usually has me use his 80's P but I brought the Slick over to show him (he's a gearhead). Plugged it in for giggles and our jaws dropped. Used it on the jingle. Both the bands I played with over the weekend were very impressed. I think this might be my favorite P! Blows the doors off my 78 P and my 90's Japan Squire P. I've owned enough in the past (50's,60's,70's). Time will tell but this thing is a tone monster! Guess I got a good one!

Well, that's really good news to hear!

Yeah, that brown one..............that's the one for me! drool

By the way, can you tell me the weight (light, heavy)?

And, can you post some pics? :bassist::hyper:

Can't really post pics. Pretty much looks like the pics on their website. Pickup is hotter than a vintage P. Most hot pickups have a crappy high end. I really like the pickup. I've used the GFS vintage and thought it sounded like a standard Duncan P with a little less smoothness. This one's hot and ballsy but tight with a nice high end. I really like it! I'm a pickup tweaker though I've never used Lollar, Fralin or Nordstrand. So far I don't wanna change a thing. Played this bass through an old Ampeg B-15 , a Fender Rumble(current model) 500 watt rig, a BBE preamp into a QSC power amp / Eden 4 by 10 and a last minute gig tonight through the house's beat up Peavey TNT 130. It sounded great through everything!
