Yamaha 80's BB Series

Wow. Flashbacks (kinda)... My first *real* bass was a BB300. The epitome of cheesy, but I loved it! It was this puppy, but in black...

That's a similar to mine. Obviously mine wasn't a 300, but similar. It wasn't expensive, is great for learning on, and makes a good sound. My teacher has complimented it often. It's a nice no fuss bass. I love it.

Well, got the BB3000 back from defretting- guy did an excellent job. A few pics :)

I have a BB3000 from Dec 1984. Black, passive, gold hardware, V, T and 3 way toggle. I have the following questions that perhaps someone can answer.

1. The bridge looks exactly like a typical std Fender bridge and is badly tarnished. Does anybody know if the (Fender replacement) Badass II bridge will fit as a direct replacement on a BB3000? Or, can someone tell me the exact screw-hole spacing on the Badass II (I can't see this on their website).

2. My bass has a V, T and a 3 way toggle switch. I thought the V,V,T controls of my previous Jazz bass were really versatile. Does anyone know or have a schematic for this wiring? The BB3000 mixes humbucking and single coil pickups which might be an issue.

Thanks for looking, any comments much appreciated.

I love the Yamaha BB series but Yamaha themselves kinda spoiled it when they gave the range the shape of the TRB series basses.

It's a BB-series bass but it sure doesn't look like one.

They should have stuck with the original shape.

As for my own experience with Yamaha's I played an RBX during my high school days and I currently own a Paciffica guitar.

The difference between the BB3000 and BB2000 is that the BB3000 has a VVT control layout. The BB2000 is VT and a toggle switch.

The 1980s BB series were fantastic basses. If they were still being made in their original configurations and at the same quality level, they would be competition for Custom Shop Fenders and USA Laklands. The only difference is that the flagship BBs were neck through basses.

You know, I REALLY agree with the good Doctor about the quality and playability of these basses - INCREDIBLE instruments!

YOu know, you mentioned . . . "...the difference between the BB3000 and BB2000 is that the BB3000 has a VVT control layout. The BB2000 is VT and a toggle switch..."

I would like to mention other differences - I have a BB2000 and a BB3000s - I know that they are different in that there is a reverse P and a switch on the 2000, whereas the 3000s has a regular configured P and a tone knob. THere really is an enormous difference in sound. I bought the 2000 before the 3000 and I expected them to sound rather similar, despite the P config. However, I am amazed that the two are so dissimilar in sound. The 2000 is the slapper with very clearly defined highs and a very pleasing dark bottom as well. The 3000s doesn't have those highs, but has very powerful but pleasing mids and lows. Not a slapper, but has such a well defined bass sound that it really is very pleasing in an ensemble. The 2000 sounds SO GREAT by itself that I love practicing on it, but in an ensemble, the 3000s seems to pull SO much weight, and is so well defined that I have been using it much more.

Just LOVIN' these '80s BB basses!

the reason why I would love a 5000 is actually the string spacing... very narrow and unusual! :) I will look for one of them sooner or later... :hyper:

Oh yeah, Baby!

That's one more thing that I REALLY love about the BB5000: It's string spacing!

At first, I found the string spacing too tight, but after I played on it for a while, I began to really like that it is so very EFFICIENT on BOTH the left hand AND the right hand, that playing becomes easier.

After playing the 5000, I play other basses and find them quite cumbersome and inefficient - my hands had become used to the ease of playing the BB5000.

I once had a BB300:

I traded it for a TRB5F, partly because I already had a good P in my Squier Vintage Modified Precision.

2 days ago, I bought a BB400S fretless.

It's awesome :) Especially for the $100 I paid for it.

i'm thinking about getting one of the BB PJ models (vintage ones) but am wondering which ones have the slimmer necks (looking for a fender jazz type profile)

just the bb5000? or are the 3000s and 1600 slim as well?

thanks :)
I've got a BB1600, and the neck feels about like a Fender J to me. Definitely a slim profile. Here's a very brief video.
