Dude, I was bidding on that with you. I am baseballfan3000 on EBAY! I didn't wanna pay quite that much 'cause it's just a novelty to me, but you definitely did not pay too much at all. Glad you won it and not someone else! PS...if you decide you wanna sell it when you get your new one, drop me a line, I may be interested...and we can keep it in the family! I was watching the bidding go up for the last 10 minutes. I thought for a while it might go for $200 - 250. I'm thinking I got it for at least $100 less than buying direct from Japan. I'm drawn to pointy guitars, all BCR's and Jazz basses. Not sure how this got me gassing. Gas moves in strange ways :rollno: I will definatly give you first refusal if I decide to sell it. I'll also put up a review.

Fellas, I have been communicating via email with Ishibashi Web Shop for a couple days now. They can basically get you any SBV bass you want for about $450. They've discontinued the yellow and the light blue colors though. If anybody wants, let me know or post here and I'll give you the email address that I used. I also have links to the web pages they sent me to look at...none of 'em are in english, but they show pics of the basses so you can see colors & configs. Peace!

I have a SBV500, Yamaha reissued them in the US around 1999-2000, then pulled them pretty quick. I had no idea they were still available in Japan until I read this thread.

I bought mine on Ebay new-old stock for about 220 dollars, around 2001. It has a slim neck with satin finish. The neck is fast and it's a blast to play it. A fun bass, for sure. Mine is yellow, I thought it was the best color of the US re-releases (metallic red and metallic blue were the other choices). I like to think of the yellow as "TV Yellow"... it's kind of like Dijon mustard and looked the most "vintage" to me. I like weird and unusual basses and that's what drew me to the SBV500. You can see the SBV500 on Ebay every 6 months or so.

My Yellow SBV arrived on friday and I must say, I'm quite impressed. Other than the stock strings which must have been designed to remove finger skin :eyebrow: it's an awesome bass, especially for the $$$$. I'll post pics and a more detailed review ASAP.

Anyway, I noticed one day that if you held those Yamahas up face to face with a Rickenbacker bass the bodies are nearly identical, just flipped. Kind of interesting that there's a pic of a Ric off to the side in the pic at the top of this thread.

Oh, by the way, on the topic of actually tracking one of these down, I HAVE seen them pop up occasionally on Ebay. There are the newer, reissue ones, and there are older, vintage ones that surface from time to time. You may want to just watch Ebay for a while.

I remember playing one at GC and being a lefty, thinking that it would be a perfect bass for me to "flip" and put a strap lock on the bottom horn. :D
