If you're not totally sold on getting a hard case, and you're a gigging but non-flying player, I highly recommend checking out the Mono M80. I recently got the dual version and can't imagine using anything else (unless of course I started flying around all the time).

Found this on Craigslist. The finish is in rough shape with plenty of dings, scratches and finish cracks. Lot's of grunge on it.However a quick setup and a new battery and it plays and sound phenomenal.
Best $150 bass I've ever had.

However it does come with a question. Can anyone tell me what the mid switch settings are on the TRB MK1

Ooof! A mk1 for $150! You win frnjplayer! Although I'll never understand what blind person painted the early trb basses! ;)

The mid knob has 3 settings
Click 1 - flat
Click 2 - mid boost (guessing 12-15db)
Click 3 - mid cut (guessing 12-15db)

The mid frequency is determined by the one of the 2 tiny rotary dials on the circuit board in the bass cavity. The other is for overall bass output level. Use a small screwdriver to adjust these. I leave my output all the way up and my mid frequency right in the middle.

I leave my mid control flat 99.9% of the time aka I don't use the mid eq at all. (1st position) a little boost in both the low and high and you've got the amazing trb sound.

Put simply, it's the best sounding bass I've ever played. It's one of the only instruments I've ever played (guitar, bass, chapman stick, whatever) where I didn't want to change anything about the sound. EVERYONE seems to notice the difference between my other basses (A recently departed Aria Steve Bailey Fretless, my previous TRB and a Cort Curbow). The singer in my band, the drummer, even my wife who's not even musical thinks it sounds amazing. It cuts through so well if I accidentally bump an EQ knob on the bass, the singer notices it lol

They're very bright but at the same time full bodied. The EQ from bart is so variable, along with the pickup blend, there's a wealth of settings to pick from and absolutely all of possible knob combinations you can think of still sound good. I tried to figure out which model g6s they are, but they've only got serial numbers on the back. They have a '96 in there, so my assumption is the pickups are 18 years old. I dont know if they had multiple types of G6s like they do now.

The preamp is the 3 band with the push pull on the mids to change the mid freq. it seems to be the 5.2AP But I'm not 100% sure.

If you're considering putting barts in there, do it. Do it now.

I'm actually curious how the 6PII I ordered is going to sound against it. I'm fully ready to take the pickups out of the PII and put in some barts if I have to - lol... Or maybe some Nordstrands if they make the shape, you know, for variety.

Thanks so much for such a terrific response. The bass, as it stands now, has such a powerful sound, just not enough variety for me and just a wee bit 'honky'. It's playability is outstanding, so I want the output to match. I've toyed with an Aguilar OBP-3 with Barts - I've seen several mods with that configuration, but I've always loved the Bart sound.

I've played the new (piezo bridge) 6's and they're beautiful. A much more clinical tone (if that makes sense (due, largely I suspect, to the ebony fingerboard). I was suitability impressed - and I'm you'll be too.
But there's nothing quite like the '96 :)

Oh, I think Nordstrand do make pickups that should slot neatly into the new (wider) pickup cavity. Good luck!

Yeah, the last TRB6 I had, something about it was slightly lacking in the tone department, too, but it played great. The new one is just a monster all around. I found it in a pawn shop locally as is, for like 850$. Offered them 800$ and we were both happy lol. It is literally the only time I've ever walked into a store and seen a TRB. They let me try it out through a 15 watt squier practice guitar amp at the store, and it still sounded good through that. Couldn't believe it. It was only after I got home I found the preamp was bart, too. Cant believe it sat in the pawn shop for 3 years!

for the 6PII, if I don't dig the tone of the pickups, I was considering trying to see if Nordstrand can make the big singles in the 6PII shape (EMG45 shape, right?). I used to own a newer Ibanez SR1206 that came with the Nordstrand big singles stock, and it was the only other bass I'd put in the same league tonewise as my TRB6 with the barts. Not that they sounded the same, but just the quality of the tone.

Hi Amigoz2k,

I am going through a similar thing. I have a TRB 1004 J and have found that the pickups are EMG 45 sized.

There are a few options, Bartolini, EMG, Seymour Duncan SSB and quite a few others.

Any pickup that uses the rail design is a good option as Yamaha use the same size Pup for there 4/5/6 string TRB's.

I have recently upgraded to an EMG Pre and JCSX and CSX Pickups. Still waiting on the parts so can't judge on the sound just yet.

Alot of members have felt the pickups were great but that the Pre was not the best. If you are unhappy with the sound I would maybe start with the pre.

As I have stated several times in different threads, I have found that the Body,neck and playability is second to none but all the other bits and pieces are the difference between a TRB and a BB2024 or similar.

I am currently doing a giant upgrade project on a TRB.
