Okay guys, got a few quick questions about Yamaha TRB.
I found a used TRB5IIF (Japanese Fretless 5) in trans blue at Guitar Center (year unknown) for $999.
There is also a new TRB1005FTB (Korean Fretless Trans Black) on musiciansfriend for $799.
I know very little about Yamaha TRB, but here's what I do know:
-That 5IIF is -awesome!-
-The old ones were Japanese and the new ones are Korean
-The Japanese ones are significantly more expensive than the Korean ones
-The new ones look cooler, but most everybody agrees that the old ones feel better, and sound better
-That the 5IIF is no longer available brand new.
Here's my assumption, is it true?
Korean TRB is to Japanese TRB as Mexican Fender is to American Fender. True? If so, I would not want Korean as I am trading up my MIM Fenders for a MIA J-Bass at the end of this month. I would want something on par with MIA.
Questions I have:
-How much would that 5IIF have been brand new (I want to know how good a deal $999 is for a used one)
-From what year to what year was this bass in production?
-If I would not be satisfied with a MIM Fender, would I be satisfied with a MIK TRB?
-If it were you, would you buy it?

Here -was- the plan:
I was going to trade my MIM Fenders in for the MIA, and then de-fret my OLP MM32 and use it as my fretless while over the course of the next 2-5yrs, I saved up enough to get a really nice fretless.
I looked at several options, some of which were not fretless, but I'd de-fret (Like the Conklin GT-7, Bongo 6, Stingray 5, or the 5-string MIA P-Bass as just a few examples).
Ultimately, I decided that I didn't want to do any extensive mods to such high dollar equipment, and I wanted MIA, so I narrowed it down to the Tony Franklin P-Bass, Bongo 5 Fretless, or the upcoming Steve Bailey Fretless 6. The cheapest of which was $1600. I also wanted to defret the OLP in the meantime (approx $200 for professional job), and the preamp needs replaced (about another $150-200 p/l....I have the preamp bypassed in the meantime, btw, so it's passive, but it still sounds real good)
At a minimum, I'm looking at around $2000.
At Guitar Center, I discovered this TRB going used for $999. Based on what I know of GC pricing, I estimate the new cost to be in the range of at least $1500, and at most $2000. I know it's MIJ instead of MIA, but MIJ is to Yamaha what MIA is to, say, Fender. So in that case, I'd give it a pass. Plus it looks really sweet and sounds great! And all told, I'd be spending around $1000 less, and not have to wait several years to do it. Plus, I could give away the OLP. I know just the kid who'd love to have it.
So, that's why, I'm leaning very heavily towards getting it (Lord Willing!)

I don't think that's a TRB. It has too few knobs, and the body form is a bit off.
When those were discontinued at MF they were going for a blowout of $699 in 1998 or 1999. For a long time the new street price of the TRB5mkI which I own was around $1050. I've played both and for me the earlier version is nicer all around. I have a fretless TRB5FmkI which has yet to inspire me, maybe I'm not a fretless player yet! To help clarify the TRB history as I know it, TRB5P which was the first in the early 90's then the TRB5mkI w/ the sculptured slap about 1996/97 followed by the TRB5II which looked much plainer but had a 35" neck if I recall.
The main complaint about my TRB5mkI was that the preamp was noisy when boosted, I find that not to be a hassle. In fact I had a bartolini preamp installed for a while and went back to the original Pattituci inspired preamp because it works better for me.

I'm really satisfied with that istrument. I tried a trb5pII and wooow piezo works perfect. Now my question is-is it possible to put a piezo bridge and piezo pre in 1005.Anyone tried? Or on similar yamie?
Anyone know anything about the TRB 1005 series? Nice looking bass but don't know about playability and sound or where it is made. Bill
I have one. Playability is excellent. The neck is narrow at the nut end, and widens toward the bridge. It has a smooth satin finish on the back which feels very comfortable. The inherent tone is bright and clean, and the EQ is powerful. I set mine flat and use a Sadowsky outboard preamp for tone shaping, because I like its EQ points better. The bass is made in Korea.
I got my TRB! It's a used circa 1999 TRB5IIF in transblue!
I'm sorry I don't have an actual pic of it yet. I do have this though, even though it's showing the TRB5II instead of the TRB5IIF....at least I made it myself (MS Paint! Woohoo!)
