Has anyone ever changed out the preamp on a Yamaha TRB5?
I recently got a used TRB5 for a real good price and I like the bass a lot in terms of it's feel, construction, response, etc. I don't love the electronics though, especially the treble EQ -- it's kind of brittle and annoying, adding finger noise, etc.
Has anyone ever retrofitted a different preamp on one of these, any recommendations, any issues using other preamps with the Yamaha pickups?

Sorry Bobby King I have no answer, but, somehow, I have the exact opposite question !
My TRB6P is currently fitted with Bartolini G6 PUs (still original Yamaha PZ-4 preamp). I bought it that way, but I still have the original Yamaha PUs somewhere in a box.
I never found the warm sound of the barts perfectly right when blended with the piezzo. In fact, turns out I don't like the barts much.
So now, I'm thinking of switching back to the Yamaha PUs.
Did anybody experience that ?

I had Barts in my TRB6P and never really liked them either. I'm happy with the stock pickups on my TRB6JP - although I can't stand the preamp....

I did it ! I did the thing ! I switched back to the the Yamaha PUs ! A quick setup and it's a whole new world out there...
The 6P is a particular instrument, I guess everything was designed carefully, so the Barts didn't belong... As for the preamp, I don't mind it, it's bright and the mixed piezzo adds so much overall "punchyness" and sustain.
I remember the words of a reviewer somewhere who wrote the TRB6P "had more of a grand piano than a bass", it strikes me know : he was so right !
So, what about that card, huh ? Do I get any discount, you know, like in restaurants or something ?

I got my Yamaha TRB 1005 today from MF and it is a very nice bass. I'm glad I went for it over the MTD.
HMZ: It's cool to see your posts, first you're wanting to check TBR1005 out and then a few days later receiving one.
I've never had a TRB but I've tried out a few and they are very solid instruments. I had a BB404 a few years ago and it was a good bass and solidly built.

Hi all. I just got my TRB5PII. Really love it. Never knew the tone would be so versatile, especially with the piezo. Dial in more piezo tone, and it sounds really aggressive! Currently setting her up again. Hopefully i can get the action i want, the same as my warwick..
Anyone have a TRB 6'er they want to sell? I am looking at buying one, but I thought I would ask my fellow TB brothers first. I would love a TRB6JP or a straight up TRB6 (japan).
Hey all. I have an opportunity to grab a 1006 new, but the weight is about 10.8lbs. Is that normal or is that on the heavy side of these? Ouch!!! I am a big guy, but I am also a big wuss.
I may be selling my TRBJP if I can get my hands on a good Spector 5er. I'll have it at the GTG on the 19th too if I don't have the Spector by then. It's an awesome bass, man, I'm having a tough time deciding between it and my Euro 6LX. Best slap tone I've ever gotten from any bass, and it growls for days.
I've played two TRB1006s and I'd guestimate that they were a bit above 10lbs so that sounds about right. TRBs old and new aren't the lightest basses around. I've never had one under 10lbs but they've all been 6ers. To make up for it, they feel great and balance perfectly. Depends on what you prefer in a bass i guess and coming from that MTD I'd think anything would feel like a cinder block, lol.
