I have the same gneration TRB 6p that the prior owner did the Bartolini install on, but kept the stock preamp. I obviously can't compare it to stock, but it sounds very good. I have no issues with the stock preamp. In your shoes, I'd try the pickup swap alone before dumping the pre to see if that suits you; if not, you're halfway there. YMMV.

I also have a TRB 5 that is all stock, and have no issues with its sound. I like the TRBs because they sound like they do, not like something else.

Hello Paul, I have a Yamaha TRB6P. As one of the pickups died, I replaced them with Bartolini G6 pickups. I also added a Glockenklang preamp. The bass kept some of it's character, but the sound is a little better, in my oppinion. I play it on passive mode now and I like the sound. If you want I can send you some songs recorded live.

I just ordered the Bartolini G6 original and a passive wiring with vol/vol/tone/tone, using the extra hole for the jack (won’t use anymore the barrel jack, I really don’t like it).
In case I’ll go for a preamp in the near future I’ll put a Glockenklang too.

Hi,

Is your stock bridge by any mean in gold color and in good cosmetic condition ? If yes, I would gladly buy it to replace my faded one :)

unfortunately no, sorry!

As an aside, my luthier said I could use the Hipshot B style 19mm bridge, but drilling would be required. I am still not aware of any direct replacement top load bridges. If anyone knows of one please advise!

By the way, would anyone have a lefty TRB-5 for sale ? I am considering both TRB-5II and TRB-5P, although I am not even sure the TRB-5P was issued in left-handed version back in the day. Thank you !

I bought a ‘97 TRB JP just months ago. It is just everything I expected and then some. Amazing tone. 5 kg, though.

I love everything about this bass, but I wanted it to be a reliable bass for gigs and, since I have it, the preamp has show some worrying signs.

For four times I have plugged it in and there was nothing but a weird, old modem like, tone. Then I unplugged it and eventually all goes back to normal.

Honestly, the only thing I’d change is the preamp, pickups sound phenomenal to me.

So here’s me guessing if someone has used a buffer + John East Uni preamp before with a Trb.
Does the tone resulting be as amazing as it is.
And will it be space enough in the rear to fit it in.

I’ve read the whole thread twice months ago, but I ‘d like to ask anyway.

This is my flagship bass and it deserves the best.

Ntact the company to see what they recommend. I have an audere that required some resistors to buffer hot pickups. They made the recommendation of what values to use. Worked like a charm. I would highly recommend the Audere btw

To be fair I changed out the pickups as well but the pre has such great controls over the high and low mids you can do anything with it honestly.
I did solder the resistors myself. They come with a cap for using active pickups but mine were pretty hot. They are 1st gen SD Blackouts. Soldering isn't hard. Stew Mac and seymour duncan have some great videos on wiring guitars. Just get a good soldering iron and don't leave the iron on anything for longer than you have to. Tin your wires first also. It's really fast. Not rocket science. Anyone can do it!

Hello everyone,

are the TRB basses discontinued or not? It's not listed on Yamaha's website in my country but Thomann is supposed to be shipping the 1005J again in 8-10 weeks.

I'm considering getting a 1005J but I'm not sure I'm going to be able to try one before I order. Ergonomically, do they feel the same as the new TRBX line, only an inch longer? Any comparison between these 2 would be helpful since I tried out a TRBX605 already and found it nice to play.

I recently acquired a TRB-5! I’ve had the TRB-5ii for some time, but I wanted to see what all the fuss about the original TRB-5 was. I’m still forming my thoughts, but it’s a sweet-sounding bass!

One question - have any other TRB-5 owners found that there is a volume jump between flat and EQ1/EQ2?

I have owned a trbx 505 and the trb 1005. They feel similar in my opinion. I didn't have the 505 very long because I didn't care for the tone, it was quite dark to me. I still have the 1005 and it sounds much better to me, more punch if had to try to describe it. The 1005 is a good bass for money.
