yardsale, score?

Just goes to show it's still worth following up on those really vague postings with no pics---

I saw this ad on Friday night, sent an email asking what kind of bass it was (not expecting a reply, but figured Id ask to save a trip out there) and the seller responded. It was a "vintage Vox cougar, and it was going to be at least $1000". I wished him luck at his yardsale, and went on with my weekend.

Got a text from him Sunday night, "are you still interested in the bass, I'm willing to negotiate"

He sent a pic, I drove out, and negotiated a buy at a much more reasonable $200. I know it's not the yardsale score of all time, but it's particularly interesting for me to find this bass at a yardsale only because I bought it's 6 string cousin at a yardsale in 1987 for $15, and still have it to this day.

Here it is with it's 6 string partner, and after a quicky cleanup yesterday--

Anybody have a used set of short scale flats laying around??? This thing needs em DESPERATELY!!

I think that bass looks SOOOOOO cool... but, I feel like I'd snap that narrow little neck off in my hands I f I tried to play it!

Are you going to hang these beauties on your wall as 'art," or will these actually be played? Hobby play? Gigging? Just curious...

Oh, and they DO make a lovely couple!

The neck isn't *that* narrow; I doubt you'd snap it.

The two pics of the bass reveal different pickups; which is the OP's bass?

My second bass was like the one in the second pic, only sunburst. If I had known then what I know now about fixing dead spots, I would have kept that bass and who knows? I might never have moved on to long-scale basses.

I'll try to answer all your ??s.

-As far as the pickups go, when I bought the guitar, the pu's were painted black. I was able to wipe the paint off with some thinner and expose the original white plastic. That, and I cleaned a ton of previous owner goo/dna/crud off the fretboard and gave it a good oiling.

-I will play the bass, and when I'm not playing it, it will hang next to it's 6 string cousin.

-It is a real vox, the name was haphazardly scraped off the headstock.

-Neck isn't narrow....I mean, it's not a 57 p bass baseball bat, but it's not crazy thin either. I had a vox apollo a while ago, and that neck was crazy thin.

Bassamatic-- thanks for the tip on the medium gauge strings.
