Exactly. A fight for the top of the mountain; most common with amateur musicians who have no desire to listen to what the other musicians are doing.

Not just the mountain top is good enough for guitards. The want the whole mountain and the valley and leave the bass the swamp.

I think we've all been in a volume war situation. Use to play with a guy who had a Marshal 50 watt head with no master and 8x12's. The only way he could get "his sound" was to crank it up to deafening levels. We lost more jobs over his volume thing. We finally fired him and got someone mature enough to play with working musicians. The only thing volume wars accomplish is lost gigs.

I agree with that, always hated bassy guitar players and after reading other posts I see the tone controls are kind of weird on this thing. I'm used to Ampegs where the controls do what they're supposed to do, you crank the mids up on an SVT, that's about all you'll hear, turn it to the left, it'll just about disappear, same with bass and treble, very intuitive.

one post said 10-10-10 was flat; another post said 2-10-2 was flat. does anyone know definitively? it seems to me that a scoop control would be redundant with a 2-10-2 flat e.q. setting baked in.

So guitar players are going to EQ their low end down so we can be louder if that's what you meant? Not in my universe. Be smart and get out of their way, a band should not be a competition. A good bass sound certainly doesn't come from diming the mid knob especially with one 210 cab, all that will do is start a volume war.

I happen to like the sound I get diming the mid knob.

If the bass is trying to cut through the mix, and they are trying to cut through, and the guitars are trying to cut through, there ain't no mix. Everyone on stage SHOULD be trying to fit into the mix. If the band can't grok that, no gear or EQ tweaking will fix it. Look up "frequency slotting".

Frequency slotting is cutting through the mix.

All amps that use a Fender tone stack have the 2/10/2 = flat problem. Ampeg uses a different style EQ circuit, so their midrange control can both boost and cut.

Exactly, and the bass's slot is just above the kick and just below the guitar/kb/etc.

The OP asked about the resonance knob. All the way right is "tight" low end and all the way left is "loose" low end. The scoop know only works with the little button pressed in. BTW you should try that. It will help you in the mix.

I have the same 210 cab ( assuming it is the Traynor one), I also have the 1x15. If I only take one it is the 15. The 210 is a nice cab but it lacks authority in the low end. It adds really nice punch though. Using it alone I would turn off the tweeter. My eq would be treble 0, mids cutting a little low mid, bass at about 4 to 5. Keep the gain below half unless you want overdrive and turn up the master.

I find I like active basses with this amp a but more than passive ones. I work around that by usung an Eden WTDI to make my passive Warwick into an active bass.

Fwiw, I've never had any trouble cutting through, and was actually asked to turn up last night by the guitarist/singer. It was nice to get the Master past 4 for a change...

I always start with tones set flat and go from there. Why are you boosting the mids? That just puts your bass right in the middle of guitar territory, try boosting the bass and setting the mids and treble somewhere near the middle so the sound is below the guitars. You're never going to get presence with a bass trying to compete with guitars, you need to aim lower and play with the kick drum, it needs to be in it's own sonic space.

All "mids" are not created equal. With bass guitars-- boosting the low mids helps to hear the bass lines in the mix.
Also, as others have said, you have to convince the guit players that they don't need their sound to be bass heavy.

I played one gig with that amp and the 210 cab (back line provided)

Could not get a clean sound out of the rig.......210 cab was not enough for outdoor stage

YBA-2 with two Mesa 2x10 traditional cabs, mids and bass boosted and the scoop off. Sounds fabulous and cuts through well in the band I play in, two guitars and keys, classic rock and country. Occasionally I stack the cabs vertically but hasn't been necessary. Really pleased with this amp.

The kick meat is centered at 80hz. That's the start of the lows in the GUITARS and the start of the lowest mids of the bass.

Yes I realize that about Ampeg their midrange control is active, I've been using them so long I would have thought that they had changed them years ago. I had a Fender Dual Showman years ago and it's tone stack really didn't do a hell of a lot even though i wish I still had it.

I very rarely try to tell guitar players how to play or how to set their amps unless they are obnoxiously loud, and I have no problems with guitar players drowning me out, I use an SVT which not only is loud enough it is versatile enough, I don't need to exaggerate any frequency with my bass to have my proper place in the mix in fact i use flatwounds and a P bass and my bass always sits in the mix nicely, how do I know that? My sound man tells me. I will occasionally boost the lo mids though for more presence but not too much, my whole thing was if you boost an SVT midrange all the way, that is all you will hear, didn't realize that other amp manufacturers hadn't followed along, this is another reason to stick with Ampeg. I even am able to get a good sound out of an old B-18 because the tone controls are very responsive.

Lots of tube amps still use the Fender tone stack for some reason. Some SS amps do, too. Maybe because it's simpler? I don't know. I much prefer the ability to boost the mids. The custom amp I commissioned actually has boost only mids.
