While I agree with the sentiment and conclusion, to be clear, the article says nothing about using drive in theatre locations. That's just an assumption ppl in this thread made based on the headline (which is not a good look, if I may say so).

In fact, they go on to say that some of the proposed locations can fit up to 1000 vehicles. If every car had four ppl, that would be an attendance of 4000 audience members and that is plenty for a big name concert... Not that I'd be much interested in attending though. I might feel different of I had a pickup truck that I could party in but I drive a Honda fit.

As for movies dying, meh. The locals theaters near me were packed before the virus hit. Sounds a bit like thinking drum machines and synths will put all drummers and bassists out of work. 40 or so years later, still waiting for that to happen.

Restrooms and adequate facilities to properly wash afterwards are what prevent these ideas from being doable. Having 4,000 people socially distance, only to step into a humid 3 x 3 box where everybody else also "goes" when the cooler in the car is empty, followed by a "foot pumped, cold water, soap ran out an hour ago- what paper towels?" hand washing afterwards. No thanks!

yeah, I'm not going to go park in a 1000-spot parking lot for a concert :roflmao:

You can get about 150 parking spots in an acre, so... you'd need almost 7 acres for 1000 spots. Sight lines and audio are gonna be :poop:.

Seems like a kernel of good idea with some significant catches that haven't been thought all the way out (and may not be solvable in a safe manner; a crowd mostly confined in cars still needs to use the facilities).

See y'all next summer, I'll be wood-shedding in the studio this summer.

How about an at-home drive-in? Let's say your favourite band is streaming a gig. Go sit in your car in the driveway or garage, watch the gig event on your favourite tablet, sit it on the dash, grab your favourite snacks and enjoy. Not much different than listening to it on FM, and you get a better view of the band. I'm really only kidding, but if you just want the atmosphere of your car, you don't have to fight people or traffic (or viruses).

Most ppl are far more open minded than the folks who frequent talkbass. I wouldn't be surprised if some of these shows do get a decent turnout.

nope- I don't want to play or spectate at a drive-in music performance.
If this is the end of live music, so be it, I've had a great run of 35+ years.
Now get off my lawn. ;)

I was just talking about this the other day. I live in an area where we still have 2 or 3 drive-in theatres that are still open. I was wondering when someone would have concerts, comedians, etc. and just broadcast through the FM transmitter and project the band or comedian on the screen. I miss concerts during this virus and so far the streaming stuff leaves a lot to be desired. We took our kids to the drive-in movies many times and they loved it!
Those places hold 100+ cars and 4 people per car would be a full house! Keep on rockin' in the free world!

Even worse, they're talking about two spots per car, plus a buffer space (per the graphic in the aricle), so a 3000-car parking lot for a 1000-car audience, so... 20ish acres of audience space. Bring your telescope.

Locally, a drive in concert will allow up to 6 people per car and sit on blankets or chairs on each drivers side of the car, so you dont have to sit in the car or truck....they charge according to how many in the car....dont know if they check the trunk!

Yep....i agree...many acts i know are happy with 100 or so people attending...the major touring acts not so much but hey, folks are so desperate for live music i think they will pay a premium.....$40 a car (2 people) for a local show with 2 award winning blues bands is more than fair....price goes up according to how many per car.

Hey you can bring a pet too!

I agree! We took 3 kids, the dog, pizza and beer and it was a blast. My wife was the designated driver!

I would love to see a good band live in that setting!

Oh, yeah. This thread brought back MANY MANY memories. The "All-Niter" weekends were something we always looked forward to in the 80s. Crazy times.

But watching a band in similar circumstances in 2020? No thanks. That's what concert DVDs are for.
