i attended the UK's first drive in gig on Friday.

It was great! Really well organised and everyone felt safe and happy to be back amongst live music.

Definitely not for me. I see that photograph and I don't see the appeal. If the choice were between that or nothing, I'd choose nothing.

It'll soon pass, 'though. Things will be back to what they were, and sooner than you think. You'll see.

If kids today only knew ...........the uh, fun you could have at a drive in compared to a indoor theater, well I for one am glad to have had the experience and wouldnt trade it for all the apps and ubers in the world

We still have a couple around here, thankfully. Nothing like gathering up three carloads of your friends, a bunch of cheap beer (and designated drivers) and completely ruing the experience for everyone else there. Ah, the good old days. Now we bring the kids and I fall asleep while getting eaten by mosquitoes. Good times.

Still all boils down to economics. A drive in is not big enough to make money on any kind of scale unless you charge $300 per car.
Drive-ins do not have stages. Stage- $8,000. Light show $3000. 200 amp portable hookup, or generator $2000 FOH equipment, and monitor system $2000 plus crew, insurance, and permits.
Brad Paisley and others are throwing free concerts.

A local bar in Dallas has started a drive-in movie event in their parking lot. Preceding the movie is usually a set by a local band. They cap the the cars at about 40 (multiple people can be in a car) and bring food and beverages to your car. My band is looking to get a slot at one of these shows.

This had come up in earlier discussions, with some doubt that it would be feasible, but I've wondered why it hadn't become a trend in the first place, with drive-in theaters already dying on the vine and getting torn down or converted to swap-and-shops. What's the difference between watching a movie screen and watching a band?

They're going to need those drive-in theaters for actual movies. Our indoor theaters will be opening up first week in July, so they say, but it's going to be a solid year before you can drag me into one of those places, not to mention indoor restaurants.

That said, I'd go see a drive-in concert.

While I agree with the sentiment and conclusion, to be clear, the article says nothing about using drive in theatre locations. That's just an assumption ppl in this thread made based on the headline (which is not a good look, if I may say so).

In fact, they go on to say that some of the proposed locations can fit up to 1000 vehicles. If every car had four ppl, that would be an attendance of 4000 audience members and that is plenty for a big name concert... Not that I'd be much interested in attending though. I might feel different of I had a pickup truck that I could party in but I drive a Honda fit.

Even with the magic fold seats? No party in the fit?

I think this kid will be getting more than his usual 40 or so cars. This high school student set up a small drive-in in his field with a canvas screen, and now he has Garth Brooks' team setting up the new 40' screen and projector system and going to run the venue for the next show:

So if you can sit by the side of your car, and someone is sitting in the car next to you, now we're no longer social distancing and have made this whole thing pointless.

Except at one Drive in venue you sit on the drivers side only and masks can still be worn....not ideal but safer.

The Drive in venue i am planning to attend already has sound and lighting and a stage for live bands...its a multi use venue that has much success in the past....$40 a car is starting price.

The really cool part is they have a camping area as well with free access if you attend a show.

You don't need a drive in, or even a movie for that. Any van with curtains on the windows works.

Those "magic seats" are the friggin best thing ever. I managed to load an entire PA system (including three monitors), my bass rig, a drum kit, luggage for two ppl, plus two adult men into the car and still got 400km on a $30 tank of gas! Amazing.

But as for a party, I'm not so sure.

In my day, drive-ins were for making out ... I wouldn't be interested nowadays, at my age, I wouldn't know what to do.
