Dude, don't know what thread you are reading but I never said anything remotely close to that. I said they ran about $280ish, which is probably within my budget. Maybe I can get one for $255, if I bid on one and slug it out with guys much more Ebay saavy than myself, but frankly, I can spare the extra $30.

and it is impossible to find an RE20, PR40, M88, 421 or any of the really great bass cab mics for that,Any other ideas somewhere in the $200-$250 range.

I switched from a 4x12 Mesa (one channel) to a 2x12 Mesa + 4x10 Mesa (stereo) and i only have ONE PR40!

Going to have to get another!..back in the day i paid about $400 and thought that was a great deal after i tried it! (in studio and live)

p.s. @ Toolmybass- I am a Trappiste sort of guy, my favorites being Rochefort 8, Duvel, Pavel and St. Bernidius ( Or however it's spelled). 3 Philosophers is also good and I have been known to drink Guiness, Moosehead, Heineken and Corona. I'll even swill down some Bud Light when I gotta.

I disagree.....

PR40 has a lot of ability to reproduce lows. With a mic, the only real need you have for a DI is lows, and if the mic is capable of reproducing them, then no DI is necessary. Now if you like having a DI and a mic line, that's another story, but the question was about whether it would eliminate the need for a DI.

the audix D4 seems like a logical choice, extended low end without the hyped and scooped EQ curve of most dedicated kick mics.

i've only tried it on bands a couple of times, but i remember it sounding good and solid for bass.

the old audio-technica ATM25 i used to use a lot on bass with various bands, and it sounded very good for rock stuff, to where i stopped bothering with DIs (awesome for multi-band bills). i had kind of inherited it, and at the time i just assumed it wasn't as good a kick mic as my trusty D112 egg and stuck it on bass. turns out it was a hidden jem for that application!

I agree. If you can find one of these, buy it. Works great for kick as well. ...can't imagine why they discontinued it.

I use a ATM25 for floor tom and or kick. I've tried it on bass and it works but like has been said numerous times, kick mics tend to be scooped. some guys like that tone so it may suit a lot of people.

The ATM25 is my all time favorite "everything low end" mike.
Kick , floor , bass amp , tuba , barytone sax , ....
Flater than kick mikes , leaves you all the meat to work with.
Lots of db spl and hypercardioid.
I had the chance to buy 4 of them before they discontinued it.

I'm with ugly_bassplayer on this one, a mic with attenuated lows and strong mids blended with a Di for (clean) bottom end is my preferred situation.

I prefer to use DI only but when I have to mike a bass monitor ,I often have to HPF the mike to remove garbage from drum etc... so I have clean low end with the DI.

Mic/DI combo on California Specific, since I am fuzzed to high heaven and still wanted some punch

Also used it live, and since Audix D series are pretty common drum mics, the FOH people have had no issues with it. It's nice and small, easy to position, lots of midrange punch, but I found I still needed to scoop some low- mids to fit in with the bass drum on a couple tracks, but that was for the mix, I don't feel like it compromised the sound at all.

And they're relatively CHEAP

I get the sense FloydEye's stage sound runs considerably less clean than yours. Horses for courses, but if I am sending a pretty gritty tone from the cab mic, I'd prefer to also give the FOH a clean DI signal.

Not me, bro. What I hear out of my amp is exactly what I want in the house at all times. Only DI that ever gave me that is the REDDI. And while a lot of the time I'm running clean, a lot of the time I run pretty dirty, too.

Agreed!...I spent slot of time and money getting the sound I want (coming out of my speakers) and I want the sound out of FOH as close as possible to "that" sound

I'm still looking for a magical cab that will sound exactly the same on every stage, no matter my distance from it or the varying acoustic response of the different points of the stage. You're probably (almost certainly) just playing much classier rooms than ones I often work.

Seriously, I also like to be able to know what's going to FOH. But at the same time, I like to be able to tweak my stage rig to sound good (and articulate) to me. That's why my usual preference isn't for a cab mic, but to take DI (post-eq) from the pre-amp, with a 5-band parametric eq for my stage rig, b/w pre-amp and power amp. (That lets me send exactly the signal I want to FOH, while keeping the ability to eq my stage rig.)
