It sounds like the single coils may be the way to go. I love the open sound of singles. I just thought the humbuckers might be like that but with no noise.

I don't think so. It's my understanding that the humphreys are as "hum-free" as the term sounds in pronunciation.

I've got one of the NAMM 2006 Classic Js with Humphreys. Love that bass. Sold a bunch of gear to buy it. Very traditional sound, but pumped up. And wonderfully playable. Will post pics soon.
Actually, John Suhr worked at Rudy Pensa's shop on 48th St. in NYC back in the early 80's. At the time, the basses were called Pensa-Suhr. Fantastic instruments that a lot of top NYC players were into. I think John Suhr worked in the Fender Custom Shop for a while, too. If you are looking for vintage tones and top notch build quality, you can't go wrong with a Suhr. I recently played a few Pensa basses on a trip to NY and they are killer instruments, too.

Here is my Suhr Classic J. It has such a great presence live. I love how solidly they are built. I checked out a lot of Sadowskys, Lulls, and Laklands at Bass Central and Atlanta Bass Gallery. I think the Sads are amazing but some of them sounded a little dead to me - I think due to the hollowing process that lightens them. The Lulls I played didn't have the "magic" IMO or the construciton quality of the others had ( I thought the feel and finish was a little less). The Lakland Joe Osborne was my second favorite of the three brands - it had the best neck - just butter in my hands.
I went with the Suhr because it had a really warm sound, the preamp adds lots of sparkle, and the neck has a great feel... and I got a pretty good deal. If the prices were the same, I might have gone with the Sadowsky based on looks. Soundwise, I'm pretty happy and I think they are all comparable.

Actually That bass was verbally on hold for me when the seller sold it out from under me to you (Brian?)with out warning me first.
Man, I was Pissed. I forget, I think I had asked for 3-4 days. I contacted him on the 3'rd day after I had sold something to get it and hem (the Seller) was like...."Sorry I sold it this afternoon".
Just to be clear all my frustration is focused on the seller, not you(Brian).

Honestly, I wasn't for me. It as all about the woods,Swamp ash with a ebony board. Eh,,Bad combo for fretless IMHO. I need ALDER. Or Koa/Mahogany ect. The character of the mids is very inportant.
