I really hope that Suhr releases a 5 string eventually. They'd probably do better with a 5 than a 4.

...and I really wish that they'd still sell their 3 band preamp. When they came out with the version of their J with the 3 band recently they seemed to stop offereing the 3 band for sale....what a shame. Great preamp. I'd love to have one myself....and now I finally have the right bass for it......

Great looking basses. They don't seem to push the basses nearly as much as their guitars but they should...they have a lot to offer.

I agree. They've just got a real hard on for guitar and cater to the guitar players like crazy. They have even come out with a 7-string fanned-fret guitar before they have come out with a 5-string bass! That shows you where their priorities are. They told me they are planning to offer the bass preamp in an external box sometime next year, but who knows if it will ever happen. I really wish they would sell a 24-fret 5 string, like their "modern" guitar line, but I'm not holding my breath.

Here is my classic J,

fretboard maple with pao ferro, body wood alder and vintage J pickups.
What a bass.
I have sold my Sadowsky 4-String (makes great instruments, but Suhr is closer to the Fender sound in my opinion) and so I`m on the way to buy a second one with maple fretboard.

That is beautiful. I really like the fine grain of the alder; that must be good for toan :bassist:

Not really a whole Suhr bass guitar, but here's my 1996 Fender MIA 50th anniversary Jazz Deluxe in discontinued "crimson-burst" finish. Pic from the previous owner. It has Suhr pickups in it. As far as I know Fender only installed these for a couple of years.

This bass has a wonderful full, round, present and punchy tone. I've recorded with it.

A local dealer (Cosmo Music) has brought on the Suhr line and the ones I've had a chance to test drive have really felt great and are beautifully built.

I'd like to echo what's already been mentioned on this thread. Where's the 5-string? I recently bought a Sadowsky Metro RV5PJ, but I would have definitely had Suhr on the shopping list if they had a five string.

I met John a few times at Rudy's back in the 80s, played a couple of Pensa-Suhr basses...very sweet. I thought I'd heard that John was primarily doing the paint work & setup on those Pensa-Suhr instruments? Be interesting to compare a 2009 Pensa to a 2009 Suhr, see where they've diverged. Aesthetically the Pensa's look a bit more "boutique", less "journeyman", and istr the Pensa-Suhr instruments were similarly fancy.

Nice bass. I have a student who has one of those and I liked it a lot after playing it. Great color btw.

I've been watching several of my guitar player friends salivate over their Classic Suhrs (and then later over their 24-fret Modern Suhrs) for years now, all the while hoping Suhr would produce an equivalent product for bass. I hope it will happen someday, but in the meantime I decided to go with a Surine Homage 5, which is a 24-fret neck thru with Bartolini J pickups. I still love my Suhr Class J!

I believe one big difference between the old Pensa-Suhr basses and John's new classic J is the fretboard radius...which is currently just like a 60's fender? The Pensa's have always felt flat to me. am i correct on that? my 2 suhrs feel identical to the standard fender neck..

Ok, here it is,
my second "Suhr" Bass.

I had the luck to choose one bass from ten Suhr J`s in a german music store.
I`m so happy with this bass, incredible instrument, wow! So much punch and such fantastic high end.

Swamp ash body, maple fingerboard, Vintage J neck shape, medium frets, Humphrey J single coil pickups.

I played a Lakland Joe Osbourne. It had a fabulous neck of course a great sound. I think Suhr has the edge with his pickups and preamp, which really allow the bass to cut through. I'm not sure if I would go as far as to say that one is better than the other, although I think the Laklands are a little overpriced.

I'm really interested in trading for a Suhr bass. If anyone has one that theyd be willing to move let me know. I have a 2008Fender Custom Classic V (Custom Shop) with maple board and blocks with 3tb alder body that I'd be willing to trade even if someone's interested.

When I first saw a Suhr bass I was unaware of the company and it's reputation for building top notch equipment. I though it was just another cheap Fender knockoff, that is, until I played it. It played amazing and sounded great. Definitely a good candidate for some one looking for a boutique jazz bass.

I love Suhr basses. Mine are the best jazzes I've played. Still waiting on the 5!
