Yet another blind slap test

Thanks for the new vocabulary word! I'd been using "honk," but "gank" is way more appropriate!

It's the quality in a bass that turned me off to active electronics for the longest time. I had a G&L L-2500 that was an extraordinary instrument in every way, except I could not dial the gank out no matter what I tried. As I became acquainted with other active basses I found that they did not have the problem. My F-Bass BN5 was entirely gank-free, as are my EBMMs.

:D +1 the FBass BN model is among the most 'gankless' (:p) of instruments, which is why some (well, at least me) describe that FBass model (BN) as 'J Bass on Satin' (as a play-on-words to the classic 'J Bass on Steroids' description).

That's why I picked A as the FBass... even though... it doesn't sound like the BN's I've played. However, its as close to that smooth FBass BN tone (with that bit of separation between the mid mids and the treble) versus any of the other clips.

Trolling? Nah, just posting on how everyone here has the best bass in the world and someone else's gear sucks and they should play what you play.
When did I say that? I don't care what anyone else plays.

Maybe I should comment how a lot of you feel, because you purchased a custom 12 wood museum piece, they are instantly and infinitely better playing and sounding. :scowl:

Looks like someone's got wood envy. :smug:

Was that satin? Or SATAN?! Wahahahaha! :bassist:

What's there to envy? I've never wanted a furniture bass. To each his own, right? I'm a slab-o-caster guy. Always have been. You see my avatar. That's what I play.
No worries; I was just kidding, which I tried to convey with the emoticon (:D).

Likewise, my other comment in that post (satin or satan) was meant as lighthearted.

Just funnin' is all.

Well, it is now. ;)

What are you telling me for? I said I like A, but it doesn't have as nice a slap sound as a good Jazz, then you made a remark that needed a response.

Now you've made the thread about me telling you I don't need your advice, and you started the "off topic" part. Troll... :)

There are slap tones I like, too, but nobody asked us. As for his furniture basses, I think they all sound fine and appreciate his consistency in comparing these basses.

Be nice guys :D

I initially recorded the clips to test out the difference between Ken Smith Rock Masters and DR Hi Beams on the F. Then decided to record the other basses while I was at it.

Anyway I have updated the original post with the results, don't think anyone got all the answers right.

Was interesting to see if people were able to distinguish between soapbars vs singles, Barts vs Aeros/F (which are relatively transparent to my ears, whereas the Barts are heavily colored) in a blind test.

I initially thought it would have been alot easier for people to make the guesses. Based on these factors:

- The Yong would have been a giveaway, as there were 2 clips which are distinctly Bartolini to my ears (C & E with E being split. To me Clip C sounds relatively close to this MTD with bart soapbars through an aguilar pre on basstasters: [Invalid or Expired Link Removed])

- Remaining clips leaving the F (clip B, brightest and snappiest tone from the Swamp ash/maple neck). It sounded brighter than normal on this clip because it's recorded the moment I put on brand new DR Hi Beams.

- And the Stambaugh being the warmest sounding bass, largely due to the limba body and wenge neck. Plus the bart pre's compressed highs. Clips A & D, with D being the singles.
