Yorkville xs800 ohm question

It's listed as dropping from 800 to 600 watts when played at 2 ohms vs 4 ohms. What's up with that?

Not a typo. I used to own that amp. Best amp I ever owned. Only sold it to get into the micro amp craze. Amp had some weight to it. Hoo boy when you kick in the tube section, that amp sounds awesome. Yes, it goes down to 600w at 2ohms. Probably designed to protect speakers.

There are other amps that put out less power at a lower impedance.

Mesa Titan: 1200 Watts @ 4 Ohms, 840 Watts @ 2 Ohms, 650 Watts @ 8 ohms

If I remember correctly, 2 ohm power had to be limited on this amp so that it could run on a stand AC receptacle.


I believe the answer for your amp is encoded here:

Let's consider the current with 800W at 4 ohms VS 600W at 2 ohms.

Current at 800W and 4 ohms:
sq rt (800/4) = ~14.14A

Current at 600W and 2 ohms:
sq rt (600/2) = ~17.32S

So even though the amp makes less power at 2 ohms, it has ~3.2 more amps flowing through the output devices. FYI, more current means more heat. So my guess is the power needs to be limited to keep the output devices in a safe operating range.

You're gonna love that amp. I regret selling mine everyday! By the way, Traynor made an exact version of that amp.
