I would have to do some extensive research to find a builder who doesn't use active electronics, has relatively thin necks, only builds 4 stringers, doesn't use side mounted output jacks, and doesn't have any ugly models or finishes.

I'm in the somewhat uncommon position of only wanting to play 6-string basses, so not being able to choose that as an option is a dealbreaker.

If it's a thought exercise about the tension between being able to know what gear we really need, the ability to make do with what we have, and the consumeristic impulse to buy more fun toys, then I'm good. I have one bass I play all the time and I'm very happy with it, backup is out on loan to a friend, no interest in future purchases unless this one gets stolen or destroyed.

Yeah, I'd also be in the "I'll pass" camp for this deal. I'm too picky.

But to play the game, my top choice would probably be a Wal - good reputation, looks, versatile sounds. Importantly, they basically seem to make very similar models, so I'm pretty sure I'd be fine with whatever I got...Two runner ups would be Ritter and Cliff Bordwell. Very cool designs, most seem playable :)

If we relax the rule that we never played that brand before, my top choice would be either Fodera or Carl Thompson. Probably the former, since I'm quite happy with the 34" scale, hehe. I've only briefly played these, and they are just top notch, but according to the rules of the thread, this disqualifies them for me, so... Wal it is :)

You can choose number of strings/fretted or fretless.

Birdsong (all short scales)

Serek would be second, but yeah I’d still want a shorty there too. And Serek also makes long scale.

I’d do my homework and pick a maker with the highest resale value on their work. Once I had it I’d do a quick flip at a fire sale price, pocket the cash (or buy a new lightweight amp and cabinets :D), and keep playing the basses I already own that I like better than a shitload of other basses I’ve played in the past.

I guess a Lull. I’m a Sadowsky guy, and Lull seems to be the west coast Sadowsky. never played one, actually never even saw one in person. But they're supposed to be light, and good, so that’d be my choice.

Hmmm…so I can’t own any ofter basses? I have to sell ALL of my existing basses, too? In that case, Fodera.

4 String, 5 String, 6 string…I don’t care. I will be happy. :D
