You get a bass as a 1-time gift.

This is the deal:

1. You get one bass for free.
2. You can't sell\trade it (so price is irrelevant)
3. All your other basses are gone, and you can't buy basses anymore.
4. It is a bass company you never played\owned any of their instruments.
5. You choose a specific company \ luthier - but you can't choose the model you get.

Which company or high-end builder would you pick?

Probably Music Man, and if it didn’t work out, I’d just buy a keyboard and learn to play bass that way.

My habits are what's gonna determine any future progress I make. I could ooh & ahhh about a different color but, I get along with my Precision V and Dimension V just fine.

A Fodera 5-string P bass? Maybe.

IF, I was ordering it and buying it myself, it would likely have much more meaning to me knowing I wasn't giving anything up that I didn't want to.
