Such a tough choice considering you can't pick the model! I'd go Sandberg, but they make J-basses, as do so many others, plus what if you get one with aging done to it, EWW! Mayones, but what if it's single cut? The horror! The safe bet, Ken Smith, the tone and the look, fingers crossed it isn't a 6 or 7.

That is tough. If you played at the rough-open mic/jam/gig I used to play at you would want something inexpensive! Before you reply with play somewhere better, it was really a fun place to play! Remember fun first!

Probably Music Man, and if it didn’t work out, I’d just buy a keyboard and learn to play bass that way.

A Fodera 5-string P bass? Maybe.
