Setting up an ebay account doesn't take that much time.

If you decide to bid, you should probably send a message to the seller saying that although you have 0 feedbacks since you just got an account, that you are interested in buying it. And that you have full intention of paying. Just because so many 0 feedback bidders just bid and never follow through and so some seller might cancel your bid. Since they want to protect themselves from being scammed.

I have never personally played a Valenti, but there have been enough reviews of them done by TBers whose opinions I hold in high regard, to warrant my recommendation of them. I will own one someday, to satisfy my want of a J-style bass, but that'll be another thread.:)

Although I don't own one (:crying: ), I must say that the odds are stacked in favour of the Valenti:

1) Build quaility is famously flawless.
2) You get custom features (as you would by building it yourself) but with expert installation.
3) Valentis are becoming hot property. The resale value of a Valenti will hold up much better than a self-made bass should you decide to sell it in the future.
4) Everyone attests to how pleasant an experience it is dealing with Nino.
5) It is still not much more expensive than building your own and you don't run the risk of damaging expensive pieces of material should you make a mistake.
6) You end up with a Valenti and can boast about it here on TB and make me (and others jealous).

In favour of building your own is the fact that it could be a learning experience.

I say VALENTI all the way.

so your saying that valenti will kick the crap out of that 700 dollar made in korea ibanez?... :smug:

just got a new job as well.. hmmm.. i think i could reimburse my bank account with the money in 2 months. now i have to get to a music store and start deciding on pickups.

i also have an old carlo robelli acoustic bass to fix up (new tuner, and black nylon strings) should help it out. theres also an olp mm2 in parts under my bed. i think the truss rod is busted 110%. no movement wutsoever when its turned.

then theres the ibanez that has an insatiable appetite for strings and may need a new bridge.

o, the crap i have to deal with... :(

prolly better off just selling those and funding the valenti.

Let's see, you want a larger neck, and a better sound and you need versatility....

I think you need a Lakland! A Skyline 55-02 is right in your budget. Great build quality, super versatile with the new Lakland pickups/pre-amp (I've played the new setup and it rocks), a wider, more comfortable neck, and some of the best customer service in the biz..

That said, if your heart is set on a Fender'esque instrument, you really can't go wrong with Valenti. Never seen one in person, but by all accounts his build quality and service are great.

Modding an Ibanez would be an exercise in futility compared to the above two options.

Oh yeah, no offense, but there is probably nothing that you could do to an 55-02 to improve it.

i have yet to play these. maybe its worth a shot. :)

but the other half of me is addicted to a tele shape bass w/ spalt maple and tobacco burst :)

EDIT: just looked at the G&L site... THEY MAKE A TELE SHAPED BASS?!?!?!? wow.

and laklands r sweet too... AHH TOO MANY CHOICES.

I voted for Valenti. If you had said that you always wanted to build your own, I would have voted for that. I want a Valenti. I'm hoping that I'll have the cash as soon as Valenti #27 is ready to be built (My lucky number).:D

ON the flip side of that, In about 2 seconds I'll be ordering some wood to start building my own.

not even joking. haha

my only fear is that i don't know what i want pickup wise. im pretty sure i want dual humbuckers. but what kind?

Well, this is very true. My MIJ '62 Reissue, $600. Has EMG JV's (150) Bart Pre (125) BadAssII(60). I have around $1000 dollars into it, and it's only worth $400-$500. Only lakland has a tiny neck like my '62 jazz RI. Just make sure that your custom bass is EXACTLY what YOU want.

Nino Brown has created a nice niche here.

I'm surprised though that the Skylines haven't made it on here.

I've played an number of G&Ls and they are nice, but they don't have the 35" scale on the 5 strings, or the nice wide (but flat) necks that Lakland has. As for "too many choices" If you are considering a Lakland, email Dan Lakin (his email is at the Lakland website) and let him know what kind of sound/price/look you are going for. Chances are there is a Skyline model for you.

Also, I don't want to rain on your parade, but tele bass with spalt maple is going to bring you well over 1300.
