The last of the duo recordings from the Spring session. This one is a ballad, which always makes me think of Paul Warburton because we talked so much about how exposed ballad playing is where it’s at.

Man I don't wanna be the first to post after that ballad but someone's gotta do it... Have only done a few shows with this group, I was expecting it to be BG territory but they say they like the upright better. It's a totally minimalist bass role that would probably bore the heck out of most of you , I look for ways to make the lines interesting without getting in the way of the song, sometimes it just seems better to leave the space though. In case anyone still digs vocal-centric 145 rocknroll, here's a new one

This is pretty out there, I give a talk on the great Fluxus composer Ben Patterson's Variations for double bass 1961 and play it. Jaap Blonk talks about Kurt Schwitter's epic sound poem Ursonate and performs it, then we play a duo version of Hugo Ball's Six Sound poems all this at the Orange show in Houston an outsider art space:

Not the best audio quality but I am nonetheless very happy with the quality of the music. The first set is a new material I wrote special for this group and they absolutely crushed it for a first show. There were some hick-ups in the third tune but we sorted them out by the time we repeated the head. The line-up is James Davis (tpt), Mabel Kwan (piano), Jon Irabagon (alto), Scott Clark (drums) and myself. This is my first time playing with Jon and he is incredible. I've been trying to do this group since 2019 with Scott so it was great to see it finally come to fruition. Jim Baker joined us for the start of the 2nd set which was a blast. We also did a version of The Man Who Never Sleeps in the 2nd set for all the Mingus fans.
