I'm an old man; always in bed early but my wife woke me up coming to bed, so... I'm looking forward to more of you and Gabe lighting the traditionalist's hair on fire. Thanks Tom! Up super late or super early?
We didn’t have a chart per se, we just all knew the tune. I imagine it’s just the standard changes, or as near as we could agree on them being in the moment.
We recorded four tunes last Friday, so I imagine there will be more to come. We are just getting to know each other, but I do recall that we took the last tune WAY out, which was fun. I’m really looking forward to exploring what this group can do.
I found a couple of cuts from this old session I did for Dallas trumpeter Rodney Booth.
(I wasn't bowled over by the mix, or the bass sound, but what're you gonna do? The band was good and the arrangements nice.)
And speaking of completely different, here is a clip from a gig last week at a really cool local venue. The set list was all over the place, but this clip is about as close to "trad" playing as I ever get and I thought it was fun. It was also the first gig I had played with my old buddy Gary Claude on drums in over 20 years. Good times!

IME it takes players a long time to develop the confidence to recognize that their own silence is a legitimate musical option.
I think that means that you cannot play unlike you, which also means complete authenticity.
Man, there’s something so satisfying about modern alto players channeling Benny Carter…
