been learning viola da gamba. it makes for very nice duets or small ensembles when paired with bass i think.
We just lost the presenter of this concert in Iowa City, so I checked YT for a video of the show. Here is it is. Odd lighting, but the performance of this trio is strong!
Odd lighting, it reminds me a Daunik Lazro performance 24 years ago.
He was playing alone, we were two people in the audience but he did his thing like if we were a thousand.
Then with someone who were into this, we made a kind of ephemeral band, kind of collective.
Even if he was unable to play a tune correctly, he was respected because of his approach and knowledge.
It's not easy to play something that doesn't remind anything.
Thanks for listening! I met Daunik years ago in Austria. He is a fantastic musician! I took some lessons from Joelle Leandre and made two albums with her, she has been working with him for 30 years. I have their duo CD on this morning.
It reminds me a little bit, Providence from King Crimson.

More five-string fifths tuned stuff. Been working up this tune for a while, but it’s one of my favorites — I never get burnt out on playing it!
the bass was the hardest part here....
so exposed - gotta be in tune and clear!
there's also a bass guitar that was originally a scratch track, but it added nice texture so i kept it.
i've only been playing the viol for a short time (6 weeks or so?) but it's just so much fun i can't stand it.
I found this old dude who posts solo double bass videos on YouTube, figured I’d share here (‘one of us!’). I knew he was legit because he’s got a Shen in the background, lol
For real, though, I love these videos he’s been doing so much. He’s so inspiring and humbling at the same time, but like, he’s giving away the store - all this information, ripe for the assimilation by osmosis. Little snapshots of a living enbodiment of the Holy Spirit of Jazz. Bless him. (…and if you’re out there, thank you Mr. Moore!)

That is the great Michael Moore, one of the most amazing bassists of all time. I had heard he was not playing, so these videos are incredible news. Some of the people here have studied with him.
