You opened for WHOM???

Lets see, I've opened for Himsa, The End, and had Gene Hoglan come to one of my old band's shows.

Without me, one of my old bands has also opened for anonymus, kataklysm, and infernal majesty.

My reasons for leaving the band: preparing for berklee and not enough girls in the audience.

Seems like lots of here have something in common -- opening for Blue Oyster Cult.

This was an immense stage, and we got the front 5 feet. Drums and all. Our drummer was almost to the actual front edge of the stage. I couldn't really figure out why, because their stuff didn't even use up all of the stage behind us...

The most interesting part of the show was me breaking my D string 3/4 of the way through the 2nd set, and not having a backup, as I put on my backups right before the show. Luckily, our photographer lives 2 doors up the street from the venue, and I ran up there on break and borrowed his ancient violin-bass, took off the D string, and it JUST reached my tuning peg. Though dead and a little floppy, it got us through the show unscathed.

Fear not, the "miracle string" is back where it belongs, hanging on the wall with the relic it come off of.

Lesson learned: BACKUP STRINGS!!!!!! Fitting "Hold On, I'm Coming" onto 3 strings isn't any fun....

We also opened for Southside Johnny a couple weeks later, and had no emergencies to speak of. :bassist:

Great stories! I recently opened up for Keith Urban. Nothing bad to report, they seemed like pretty nice guys as they hurried past. I've opened other name Country acts, but usually the band(s) shoot past you on their way onto the stage. They don't really chit-chat.

I've met Kenny Loggins, his band was in the audience and came up to play a couple of tunes. Kenny's a really nice guy. He seemed kind of shy, but very nice. His bass player was 'Ready' Freddy Washington, who IMO was kind of elitist.

Hey J-Raj:

Very cool - Gary Wright is in my wheelhouse of memories for sure.

It's interesting seeing this thread still going. It started with the story of my band's drummer (a part timer like me) opening in 1970 for Led Zeppelin - one of the all-time icons of the modern music and entertainment business.

It's interesting to see how some of the younger guys see opening for relatively unknown (to those of us over 40) bands - will any of them have the impact of Zep - whether they do or not, it has been fun to see everyone's take on this.

For us old guys, some of the all-time acts TB'ers have opened for just blow me away - Blue Oyster Cult, Sammy Hagar, Grace Slick, The Coasters, The Guess Who, Alabama, Rick Derringer, Boston, Eric Burden, Steve Morse, James Cotton, Bobby Blue Bland, Steppenwolf, Ted Nugent, Metallica, Skynyrd (new version), BJ Thomas (OK I can't believe I included him, maybe because my first band did "Raindrops..."), Johnny Winter, Jimmy Vaughan, The Wailers, Willie Nelson, The 4 Tops, Maceo Parker, even King's X and Marilyn Manson.

Thanks for the memories to everyone, and keep them coming - I love this forum!! :bassist:

My last band: Hot Chocolate. Before I joined them, they opened for Hootie, ELO, Pat Banatar. The guitarist and drummer in my current band, also play in country band in the other side of Switzerland. They opened for Leane Rymes a couple of weeks back.

Hey Big Bob...good to see ya posting. Saw your bro yesterday. He's so thin these days, I'm sure he runs around in the shower to get wet. :D

Say hello to Canadian taxes for me. :D

In 2000 I was in a small jazz-folk-rock trio with bass , keys and drums. Well we played this upscale jazz club, we came in and the manager told us that Todd Rundgren was in the building and wed be opening for him. Some of you may recall, but im a huge Rundgren fan. So for me it was like " Todd Rundgren!!!, Im so ****in dreaming" well we opened, and during the last song, he asked if he could jam with us. Of course we said yes, and he came onstage with guitar and imporvised and entire 15 min song and was amazing! We hung out with him for a while afterwords. It was great!

In 2002 I played steel guitar for steve Miller in a Nashville club, he was great, reallly, really nice, almost like a grandfather- guy loves licorice.

And this isnt really opening, but a while back, Peter Frampton was in Mississippi at the dock and I did the sound for him. Nice guy.

Hey Brian: European culture, no Canadian taxes, and you get to play music too - I am jealous. Glad to hear that my baby bro' has dropped some of that girth - I wish I could!!

Keep rockin' - I'm off to Bermuda with my girlfriend for a getaway from the taxes this week... :bassist: :)

Long time ago I played in a band that opened for Joan Armatrading, Johnny Winter, James Cotton, Willie Dixon, Big Twist and the Mellowfellows, also have opened for John Schlittt and Greg Voltz. Interestingly enough my worst experience was with John Schlitt's "Christian band" out of Nashville. They just were not nice, jerks was more like it but life goes on. The Blues Bands we opened for were all pretty much very cool people.

I have opened for the Kinley's, Eddie Raven, Desert Rose Band, and Gene Watson. All great ppl except the lead singer for the Desert Rose Band, he was quite the jerk. He thought they were hot s**t because they did the backing vocals for Leanne Womack's Dance. 2 days after we opened for them we saw him rush the stage when Leanne Womack won her CMA award for Dance. He still looked like a jerk even on TV.
