I haven't opened for anyone big in a while, but in 99 or 00 my band was called last minute to open for
New Found Glory and
Saves the Day. I didn't care then, and I don't care now really. LoL New Found Glory has had moderate time on MTV and I guess Saves the Day is somewhat big in the punk scene? I don't know. I wasn't in a punk band. My band was the house band at a local club and they needed an opener. hehe does it count if you're not impressed by the name of the bands you open for?
I didn't even stay to hear either of them...
My band Distraught's Son opened for a little known national act called
Bobaflex, and my band Dogwood Tree opened for
Lynyrd Skynyrd a couple years back, and we're playing with
Blues Traveller in July of '05.
I wish I had a video for this: I had been playing bass for about a year or so and
Oteil Burbridge (I had no idea who he was at the time) was coming to my town to do a clinic. (What the hell is a clinic? haha I didn't know too much) Anyway, he came and totally blew me away and then toward the end he asked if anyone wanted to come up and jam with him... I knew I wasn't worthy, so I didn't want to, but he looks right at me and says "You look like you wanna come up here so bad big man!" I was like "no no, it's cool man, I'm cool..." haha He left me alone, obviously realizing that I was completely unable to move. haha I had the chance to get on stage with Oteil and I blew it! haha oh well, I would've made a fool of myself anyway, but just to say I did that would be so awesome. Oh well. I
did get to talk to him when he was finished and he apologized for picking on me. haha I told him I hadn't been playing long. He let me hold his Modulus Oteil 6, but I didn't know what the hell I was doing, so I put it down right away. ha I did buy his Love of a Lifetime CD and he signed it "To Jake: Thanks for supporting us! - Oteil"
Other than that, I haven't played with anyone notable. I've met a lot of national acts though, just as a fan. At various shows, I've hung out with and/or met
Snot (before Lynn died... RIP),
Incubus (twice, 98 and 00),
Life of Agony,
Killswitch Engage (with the new singer. both guitarists are jerks... EGO?),
Depswa (so very cool), Steve the drummer from
Memento (From Australia. I hadn't heard them play yet, and he's talkin to me, askin me to buy a CD... I say "well... do you guys f***in rock?" he laughs and says "Yeah we rock, man" and laughs again. They did, so I bought their CD and told him that he was right),
Dave Drainin (might be spelling that wrong) of
Disturbed, the singer from Taproot (jerk as well).
I live in the Ohio Valley, which is home to
Brad Paisley (friends of mine went to high school with him and he's very cool. calls them whenever he's in town, and I also saw him in person when he did an autograph booth thing at the mall where I was working),
Wild Cherry ("Play That Funky Music" haha the drummer in my band Dogwood Tree is good friends with those guys), and
Jim Dofka (a ridiculously awesome guitarist who tours in Europe all the time with his band
DOFKA.. anyone familiar with them?)
EDIT: Forgot to mention that the drummer in my band Lohio is B.E. Taylor's (hit the charts with "Vitamin L" in the early 80s) son. He's not that famous, but somewhat.
