You opened for WHOM???

My rather shaky claim to fame is that we once opened for Godflesh in 1990.

The "funny" story associated with this is was that we had been told it was OK to use their backline, so I went over to the bass player to check it was OK to use his crummy little combo. He was horrendously rude to me, so much so, that my mother, who was there (she was our biggest fan) gave him a right mouth-full at the end of the gig for being so uncouth (Godflesh's bass player being 6 foot odd, huge and mean, my mother being 5'1" and in her early sixties at the time). He was so taken aback he actually apologised.
Mums at gigs are ace. :)

That's great. I have a Godflesh story about their bad attitude when I opened for them once around 1996-97.

We played our set, using our gear, and being a local band with some following had a good crowd out front. (small club, it was a sellout). When Godflesh came out everyone started making their way further back from the stage, moving away from it. The singer stops at one point and gets pissy talking in some accent (don't know much about them, I'd guess Austrian if I had to, sounded like Arnold Swcharzenegger kind of). He is talking in the third person.... "Godflesh comes all the way overseas to see you and you don't come up to see Godflesh. Why you stand at the back? Come closer... Come see Godflesh" It was kind of pathetic really. As the show went on the crowd kept getting farther back or leaving, and he kept getting madder.

The fact is, they were so unbelievably loud that you couldn't get within 30 feet of the stage, it was undecipherable noise. 2 full 4x12 Marshall stacks, 2 8x10's, everything dimed to 11. On top of that the sound system was pushed beyond clipping and was distorting to high hell. I think they got pissed off 3/4 through the set and just walked off without finishing the show. They got booed alot by the few people that actually cared anymore. I think most people (myself included) were just glad that the aural assault had ended.

We opened for classic NWOBHM band Saxon, along with Blaze Bayley at the Bloodstock festival over here about 18 months ago. Awesome experience, by far the most people we've ever played to, and a great response. The other bands were a bit offish though, especially after our guitarist reminded Blaze Bayley that he'd had "relations" with his sister some years beforehand in no uncertain terms... :D

oh, man! just remembered this (got to find a way to get those synapses firing better!)...

my first pro gig in Los Angeles: I was 21, a student at BIT, and it was Fusion Night. St. Patrick's Day, too, as aI recall. while we didn't open for 'em, we got the headlining slot above the Fire Merchants -- John Goodsall on guitar (Brand X), Doug Lunn on bass (Andy Summers), and Chad Wackerman sitting in on drums for Chester Thompson who had to play with Genesis that night. CT showed up just as we were hitting the stage along with Scott Thunes, bass monster from Zappa's band!

talk about a nerve wracking night!

Zodiac Mindwarp...what an idiot.

Phil Collen of Def Leppard with his side project....nice guy...he let me use his amp to save messing around and I swear it nearly took my head off it was so loud! LOL.

A band I played with in the late '60s got to open for Cream and then watch them from the wings. An instructive gig, you might say. As I recall, Ginger Baker was swigging brandy behind his set between numbers, and sure enough he took a tumble off his throne towards the end. Clapton had dark glasses on and seemed out of it. Jack Bruce was the one who held it together, spanking his EB and singing something fierce.
