on rock/pop/funk gigs with my 70s fender my Demeter Compulator Pro is just about always on about %95. Only turns off for drastic dynamic contrast opportunities become available.
on fusion/jazz i like to go clean most the time. the only pedal I've used is TC mini HOF. my favorite pedal as of late.

Where do you set your eq on amp--flat or how you'd set it if you didn't have pedals? Or maybe that's still flat.
